Last night at Afrocan Studio, we opened the first edition of our new series, “Tomorrow’s Traditions” a space for artistic exchange, dialogue, reflection, and the exploration of how contemporary African stories can shape the traditions of tomorrow.

For our inaugural edition, we hosted choreographer Miss Lulu, presenting her compelling choreographic work, “Journal of 7.” The work was exhibited across our studio and office spaces, transforming the environment into an intimate landscape where movement, memory, identity, dance and lived experience could meet.

“Journal of 7” draws deeply from the choreographer’s personal experiences and reflections across Nigeria and the United Kingdom, exploring the complexities of belonging, migration, family, belief, culture, and the ways our experiences continue to shape who we become.

Following the exhibition was an insightful Q&A session with Miss Lulu and Obiajulu Ozegbe , offering audiences an opportunity to look the choreographic production and into the thoughts, questions, memories, and experiences that informed the creation of the work.

Tomorrow’s Traditions is about creating a platform where artists and audiences can gather, question, listen, share, and imagine. It is a continuation of Afrocan Studio’s commitment to supporting contemporary African creativity while creating meaningful conversations around the works and ideas shaping our cultural future.

Gratitude to everyone who joined us for this first edition and contributed to the conversation.

This is only the beginning.
What traditions are we creating for tomorrow?

Journal 7 showing at Afrocan studio this Thursday.

Meet the Artist | Olu Olatise — Choreographer & Dance Artist.

Olu Olatise is a Nigerian UK-based choreographer and dance artist whose practice explores the intersections of identity, memory, culture, migration, spirituality, and the complexities of contemporary African and diasporic life.

Drawing deeply from personal memory and lived experience, Olatise’s work investigates the ways family, belief systems, inherited doctrines, cultural expectations, and social structures shape individual identity. Her choreographic language creates a dialogue between Nigerian cultural experiences and contemporary diasporic realities, often using the body as a site for questioning, remembering, and confronting inherited narratives.

Her contemporary dance production, Journal of 7, explores the seven deadly sins through Nigerian and diasporic experiences. Structured as a fragmented woman’s diary, the work uses intimate and abstract storytelling to examine themes including family, migration, belief, polygyny, spiritual fear, fatalism, and inherited doctrine.

Olatise’s movement vocabulary draws from African street dance, hip-hop, and contemporary dance, bringing together grounded African rhythms, urban movement languages, and the emotional fluidity of contemporary dance. Through this hybrid approach, he creates work that is both culturally rooted and internationally resonant.

As a choreographer, Olatise is interested in creating spaces where personal stories can become collective reflections, using dance to interrogate the relationship between tradition and modernity, the individual and society, and the memories we inherit versus the identities we choose to construct.

I had the honor of guiding 7 participants through The Conclave by Afrocan in Lagos last week, and it was truly an inspiring experience.

The Conclave was designed as an in-depth session for dance event organizers and festival makers in Lagos, focused on festival-making within the Nigerian context.

For hours, we questioned, exchanged, listened, created, and reflected together on the realities, challenges, and possibilities of organizing dance festivals and art events in Nigeria.

To everyone who showed up with openness, energy, vulnerability, and curiosity, thank you. Gratitude to Afrocan for holding the space and making this gathering possible.

This is only the beginning, and it will continue to grow stronger as we expand the vision into 2026 and beyond.

Ps: Afrocan is a unique community of dancers in Nigeria focused on platforming and creating structure around Nigerian street art culture through dance and other artistic mediums. The community is currently fundraising to rehabilitate its newly acquired studio and office space in Lagos into a permanent creative hub for training, collaboration, research, and community building for dancers in Nigeria and beyond.

If you are a lover of Nigerian dance and culture, please support the GoFundMe campaign.

The donation link is in @afrocanng bio.

Sharing this post is also as important as donating, so please help spread the word within your networks.

Thank you for believing in the work.

Valu.
