Tracing the evolution of our “Tabono” piece, first featured in @mar.amor.a ’s February shoot as a bracelet.

This piece’s versatility, however, lies in its ability to be styled not only as a bracelet but also an arm cuff or choker. The adornment is still in its conceptual stages as we continue to refine our materials and explore its final form.

While revisiting the ancient West African Adinkra symbol chart, I noticed the striking resemblance to the symbol, Tabono; inspiring the name behind the piece. The symbol is representative of persistence, strength and confidence.

Founded in South Africa, DRUM was the most widely read magazine in Africa in the 1950s, displaying a vibrant, portrayal of Black urban life, culture, art, and politics. It was distributed everywhere; on the streets, in bars, and on the trains, successfully serving as a much needed escape from the harsh realities of apartheid. Within its editorial offices, DRUM created a temporary refuge from segregation, a space where Black writers, photographers, and journalists could exist more unapologetically. As DRUM’s creative director, Jürgen Schadeberg, described it, the magazine represented “a world outside South Africa.”

Beyond South Africa, DRUM editions were published and distributed in Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. This connected Black communities across the continent, fostering a sense of pride and inspiration.

Despite the South African government’s efforts to suppress and limit Black education, particularly through the Bantu Education Act, which dismantled institutions that had nurtured talented Black writers and photographers, DRUM became a crucial training ground. At the time, aspiring creatives attached themselves to the magazine, refining their craft in its pages. Photography in particular played a powerful role, offering a means to document protest action and appeal to a largely illiterate audience.

Although DRUM was never meant to be a political platform, it was undeniable that any honest portrayal of Black South African life would be incomplete without addressing their political realities. The magazine became a platform for resistance to expose the harsh conditions Black South Africans endured.

Today, DRUM continues to be published under Media24, still catering to Black South African audiences, though its focus has shifted towards entertainment, market news, and feature articles, with less emphasis on political issues. Regardless, DRUM’s legacy as a platform to elevate the African voice remains undeniable. taken in Africa by @afroesk

(3/3) This summer we worked with some talented stylists, photographers and models and it’s been beautiful to witness and be a part of this energy.

It’s been cool to see how something you make can be conceptualized and reconceptualized in different ways. Looking at how Afroesque has been integrated into the vision of others has been enriching.

This and the next series of photos feature pieces we’ve made in the past year, with a few of them hinting to a little something we have planned.
