The AFSCME family is mourning Lillian Roberts, former executive director of DC 37 and a giant of the labor movement.

She organized hospital workers in Chicago and later in New York City. In 1969, she went to jail for two weeks for defying then-Gov. Nelson Rockefeller and leading a strike of state hospital workers. She believed no fight for working people was too hard or too risky.

Roberts was a trailblazer in every sense of the word. She built power for working people at a time when very few Black women held positions of union leadership. She helped found the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and made history as the first Black woman to serve as New York State Industrial Commissioner. She later served as executive director of @dc37nyc, leading the large AFSCME council with extraordinary toughness, vision and commitment to working people. Roberts left a lasting mark on DC 37, on the 1.4-million-member AFSCME family, and on generations of labor leaders who follow her. by @afscme

It’s been one year since the so-called big beautiful bill has passed, and its costs are clear. Millions of working people have lost their health care or had their food support slashed. Meanwhile, public service workers are expected to do more while the funding that supports their work is cut.

Are you feeling the effects of the bill? Tell us about it by taking our survey. Link in bio. by @afscme

There’s nothing to celebrate about this anniversary.

One year since the Trump administration passed the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” we headed down to the National Mall to check in with people & see how they were doing. Spoiler alert: Not great.

Learn more about the damage this legislation is having on working families and how we can fight back at the link in bio. taken in Washington D. C. by @afscme

Before the confetti rained down on the massive crowds that celebrated the New York Knicks’ historic NBA championship, AFSCME members did some important prep work. Members of Local 1455 (@dc37nyc ) spent days preparing the parade route, moving street signs and installing the special "Champions Way" signs that transformed Broadway into the center of the celebration. AFSCME members just won big! The administration tried to disqualify public service workers from receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness based on supposed political disagreements.

We said: No way. And last night, the court agreed!

PSLF is a lifeline for public service workers. It gives people an opportunity to access the higher education needed for a career in public service — benefiting not just themselves but the communities they serve.

This is why we get organized! by @afscme

BYE BYE!! They’re usually better at the rebrand than this because…this is quite transparently bad! “The Working Families Tax Cut,” yet working families are paying more and the richest people got tax breaks? Hello? #afscmepartner by @afscme

A year ago, the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” was passed by anti-worker extremists in Congress. Since then, more than 770,000 children are no longer receiving SNAP benefits. Hundreds of hospitals are at risk of closing . The cost of health care coverage is skyrocketing. And that’s just a snapshot of this legislation, which represents the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in our nation’s history. It’s also why we need to get organized. by @afscme
