The city of Carmi was considering a proposal to sell its water and sewer services to a private, for-profit company. Members of AFSCME Local 3775 who work for the water department said “No Way!” and reached out to community residents to organize opposition to the sale.

As a result of that organizing, last night, the Carmi City Council voted UNANIMOUSLY to reject the proposal! Public services should always remain in the hands of the public—not corporations. by @afscme31

After standing strong for five years of unrelenting hostility from top management, CGH Medical Center employees have won their first union contract!

Hospital management spent $1.9 million on anti-union attorneys and threw up roadblocks at every turn to try to block their progress.

But CGH employees never wavered. They organized. They stood together. They kept fighting. Now, union members overwhelmingly ratified their first contract—one that provides wage increases, stronger benefits, real job protections and a voice on the job.

Members of AFSCME Local 3605 at Shawnee Correctional Center took to the picket line on July 10 to demand fixes to safety conditions that have made a hard job even more dangerous.

The facility has been under lockdown for more than two weeks because staff radios aren't working—a crisis layered on top of the chronic understaffing that already strains the prison.

“[The department] knows that the old, antiquated, outdated equipment that we use on a daily basis was eventually going to be a problem,” Local President Jon Dye said. “It shouldn’t be a shock to anybody that we’re in this position.” by @afscme31

When Bain Capital bought disability services provider Broadstep—where workers were represented by AFSCME Local 1972—quality of care collapsed as the new owners cut corners to maximize profits.

Soon after, Broadstep’s Illinois homes were forced to shut down, and caregivers like Rori Schrader lost their jobs.

AFSCME-backed legislation just passed by the General Assembly will rein in private equity's grip on disability services. Once signed, the bill—sponsored by Sen. @javycervantes82 and Rep. @lauraforstaterep—will put real guardrails on private equity ownership of disability services.

The federal government tried to disqualify public service workers with student loans from receiving Public Service Loan Forgiveness based on supposed political disagreements.

Our union fought back, and on Tuesday, the courts agreed with us.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness is a lifeline for public service workers. It gives people an opportunity to access the higher education needed for a career in public service, which benefits everyone—including the communities we serve. by @afscme31
