last month i turned 31. traversing a solar transition fraught with change; minor alterations made every day, i grapple with the newness of all things.

i give credence to every story i’ve told, and write another and another and one after that. my relationship with myself is fortified yet boundless, i welcome every small agony and minor joy, noticing them. the universe sends me signs and symbols to keep moving forward. i recover, i die and live again. this is all we have. in this life as Amanda, i feel i’ve been reborn 100 times. to the next 100.

2018; self portrait just weeks before i totaled my corolla in a head on collision that left me crippled with a strong fear of cars for months. i made sure to force myself to commit to long distance drives. i visited brooklyn every weekend, drove 10 hours to and from south carolina alone, vermont, richmond, and back to albany to the scene of the accident.

i ‘lost’ a lot in that crash. a car that had been around for decades as a part of my family history, my cameras which were an enormous part of my trajectory as an artist, hours upon hours of time spent dealing with insurance and police reports not to mention the healing of my body and spirit. *also my favorite jeans which were cut off and discarded in the ambulance

when my parents drove to the auto shop to clean out my car, they were horrified at the state of it. the owner said “it’s a minor miracle your daughter is alive, someone must have been looking out for her.” and the cop who took my statement said it too and so did all the witnesses.

for whatever material losses i endured, i gained more. a freedom i hadn’t realized i was entitled to until it was nearly forcibly taken from me. my pessimism regarding the unknown was replaced by a spirituality that recognizes synchronicity. self obsession has a tendency to dissolve under this kind of personal disaster, as suddenly everything is hugely out of our control. the growth that came along with this moment is something i would never trade. by @ag1ordano
