When I wanted to set my deadlift 1RM the other day, I was recording all my attempts starting at 115 kg. Even though this 120 kg lift looks quite effortless, I did struggle and felt like giving up. At this weird angle, I look 2 m tall. So, after failing to lift 125 kg, I tried to pull 120 kg once more just to make a nice video at a normal angle, but I had given it all in the previous attempt and was done for the day. I don't know when I will try to set my new 1RM again. Lifting that heavy is a huge stress on the body, and one shouldn't do it more than 1-2 times a year. On the last day of my spring break, I hiked to the end of Kodama. Unlike in winter, without drama this time. LOL⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡The 4-5 km-long stretch of cherry trees along both riverbanks was truly magnificent. No wonder everyone loves this place.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡I only feel sorry for the next week's runners. I worry that most of the blossoms will have already fallen by next Sunday, and so the half-marathon course will be rather sad. The 6th Honjo Craft Art Fair was held over the weekend. It was warm and sunny, and cherry trees were in full bloom, so the park was full of visitors. Kawagoe for the first time in 4 years.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡Although I spent a nice half a day today, on days like today, I miss being a typical gaijin tourist because nothing is ''wow!'' anymore. People sometimes ask me for recommendations in Japan. So I make them long lists of the coolest shrines, temples, parks, museums, and castles, and they are like, ''Nah, where is DONKI?'' LOL⁡ ⁡⁡ Yesterday, I finished my Omiya business at noon and went to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. I had wanted to go there for a while but had never had an opportunity. And yesterday seemed to be perfect. It was still cold and windy, but at least it stopped snowing.⁡ ⁡⁡ Yasukuni Shrine must have been heavy-duty, as guards were standing every few meters. The same was with Hikawa Shrine in Omiya; I guess the divine protection is not enough anymore. I also visited the Yushukan Museum, which exhibits Japan's military history. It wasn't necessarily a pleasant place to visit, though. Kaiten, the human torpedo, was the most disturbing. I was scrolling through the internet the other day when an article about Hikawa Shrine popped up. I had already scheduled an appointment in Omiya, so I checked both locations and found they were only about 1 km apart. My plan was to get up early and visit the shrine before my appointment.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡In this area, it only snows for two days a year, and it was this weekend. Yay! About 5 cm of snow fell during the night, and another 5 cm this morning, which was enough for JR to panic and delay most trains. Yay! But I could make it to the shrine.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡I had never been there before, so I didn't really know what to expect. I only knew this shrine was one of the oldest and most prominent shrines. It's located in a park, so it must be beautiful in the summer, with all the greenery around. But the wintery one was mesmerizing, in my opinion. Finished reading today.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡I was 12 or 13 when I first heard Ozzy. ''Sabbath Bloody Sabbath'' was the song; it was darker and heavier than anything I had heard before, and I instantly fell in love. And so Ozzy became my favorite artist for the next five years or so. Then I started listening to even darker and heavier music. And then, a few years later, came the MTV show, ''The Osbournes'' and I was like, ''What the hell is wrong with him?'' Little did I know, it was the booze and dope he had been abusing for years that turned him into a pitiful old man.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡20 years fast forward.⁡ ⁡Ozzy's death hit me harder than I would have ever imagined. Was it that time of the year, or was it his impact on me? I don't know. But I brought back so many memories! So I got this book, and ordered another two. It was Ozzy, so it was full of British slang and hilarious. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes it was disturbing, sometimes it was sad, sometimes it was reflective. But it was a good read. Even if I thought I knew quite a lot about him, it was good to read his story written by himself. I love that Ozzy didn't sugarcoat anything and took accountability for the stupid things he had done. Tomorrow is the last day of winter illuminations. I went to see it only twice this year: in the first week and today. Just as I assumed, the first days were super crowded because it was a novelty, and in the last few days, almost nobody would come. Also, I came very late today, only 10 minutes before the lights went off. That's because I watched an Ozzy Osbourne documentary and then an interview with Bill Ward, one of the founders of Black Sabbath. He's an excellent drummer and a nice bloke, but that's another story. Anyway, if I had skipped that Bill Ward's interview, I would have gained an extra 10 minutes for the illuminations, which would have been just enough to see everything.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡As I wrote before, this year's illuminations are much smaller than last year's, but it's still nice to sit on a bench, watch the lights, and listen to soothing music. Look what I saw on my way to the gym today: a Honjo manhole cover! It must be a new one. There had been some public works on Kyu Nakasendo Street in the last weeks of 2025, and it must have been then that the covers had been replaced with the cool ones.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡On my way home, I wanted to see if there were more covers and accidentally joined a digital Honjo stamp rally. In the Edo period, Honjo had been a prosperous post town, the largest one on Nakasendo, and the new covers and stamp rally refer to that period of Honjo history, as well as the Meiji period.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡Although I consider myself an experienced hiker, my today's course planning was beyond pathetic. I could have easily saved one or two kilometers if I had spent 30 seconds reading the map. Yay me! Anyway, I collected all 15 stamps and received three badges at the station information center. Unfortunately, I only joined the challenge in its last week (it had started in October), and so the coolest badge, the one with the Honjo buildings, was already out of stock.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡#honjo #manholecover #マンホールカバー by @aga_3776

There was not much of the day left after the Hakone Ekiden, so I went on a quick walk around Honjo - Shichifukujin Meguri (Seven Lucky Gods Pilgrimage).⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡I had to collect stamps from ten temples and shrines, and once I have them all, I can get a small gift at the information center. I wonder what it is. They are closed during the New Year, so I'll try next week. I like this year's pamphlet as it's convenient, unlike the old A3-size sheets. It also contains brief descriptions of all shrines and temples, as well as deities, so you can easily learn about these places. I started and ended at the station, and, according to Garmin, the whole loop was about 4.4 km. So next time, when Garmin challenges me to walk 5 km, I can repeat that route, starting from home this time, instead of going to the end of Kodama (that was mental) or walking laps around my neighborhood.⁡ ⁡⁡ ⁡Oh shoot! I just checked the Garmin app, and the 5 km challenge started today until Sunday! Such a waste! There is no way I can do it tomorrow or Sunday, as I already have plans.
