Wandile Sihlobo, Presidential Envoy on Agriculture and Land, convened a High-Level Roundtable on El Niño Preparedness on 12 October 2026, with support from the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) and Bayer.

The engagement brought together industry leaders, producer organisations, researchers, agribusinesses and government stakeholders to assess South Africa’s preparedness for the anticipated 2026/27 El Niño season.

While the sector enters the season in a stronger position than during the 2015/16 drought, risks remain for farmers and food security. Discussions focused on strengthening early warning systems, improving water management, supporting vulnerable producers and enhancing coordination to build resilience across the agricultural sector.

South Africa’s Agricultural Exports: Africa Leads as Asian Markets Expand

Africa remained a key market for South African agricultural exports in Q2 2026, accounting for 40% of total exports. Meanwhile, Asian markets showed growth, with exports to China exceeding US$233 million.

As South Africa navigates global trade uncertainties and geopolitical challenges, diversifying export markets and addressing non-tariff barriers will be crucial to expanding market access and strengthening the country’s agricultural trade.

Agbiz Fruit Desk Manager Wolfe Braude joined the Container User Forum (CUF) webinar, Building a Weather-Resilient Container Logistics System for South Africa, where he highlighted the importance of efficient logistics to South Africa's agricultural exports and access to international markets.

South Africa has significant opportunities to expand agricultural exports, particularly across markets in Asia and the Middle East. But market access is only part of the equation.

For perishable products such as fruit, the entire export chain needs to work together, from the farm and packhouse to transport, ports, shipping and international markets.
In his contribution, Wolfe highlighted how logistics inefficiencies can affect exporters, growers, product quality, market relationships and South Africa's broader export competitiveness.

Watch the video for his perspective on why resilient logistics are essential to unlocking South Africa's agricultural export potential.
