@agdacoroner sounds like Brooklyn before Brooklyn became a marketing word. East New York raised him during an era he described as a “war zone,” and the name isn’t some rap gimmick either. AG actually spent eight years working in a hospital morgue. You can hear that weight when he rhymes. That gravel in his voice, the dark humor, threats and neighborhood details feel lived in, not researched. He came through that early 2010s New York underground resurgence beside names like Action Bronson, Meyhem Lauren and Maffew Ragazino, but AG always sounded distinctly Brooklyn. Heavier. Colder. Like every bar had Timberlands on. Go back to “Terror Death Camp” or those grimy Meyhem records and he never feels like somebody lucky to be on the posse cut. He sounds like somebody you were waiting to hear.

And that might be why AG Da Coroner still feels overlooked even among overlooked emcees. Sip the Nectar finally arrived in 2016 after years of building his name, and his catalog connects him with Action Bronson, Meyhem Lauren, Roc Marciano, Cormega, Your Old Droog, Guilty Simpson and Fred the Godson. There’s a particular New York lineage in what AG does. The voice matters. Presence matters. And when you say something foul, it has to sound believable coming out of your mouth. AG has that naturally unmistakable feeling of hearing a dude from Brooklyn who sounds like his block made him, because in his case, East New York really did. by @agdacoroner
