Join me and @teetotal_initiative on Saturday August 29 for a workshop led by mixed media artist Almah LaVon (@agentsubrosa). Register on the events page at teetotal.org to reserve your spot!

Workshop Details
Date: Saturday, Aug 29, 2026
Time: 2:00 – 4:15 PM
Location: Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, East Liberty Branch (Room 3A-3B)

Discover the joy of printmaking in this beginner-friendly, hands-on workshop that celebrates experimentation, curiosity, and creative play. Using simple materials you may already have at home, you’ll explore a variety of approachable monoprinting and monotyping techniques with gelatin (“gelli”) plates, foam plates, stencils, and even trash bags.

Participants will rotate through a series of creative stations, each introducing a different printmaking technique or process. Along the way, you’ll experiment with an assortment of everyday objects and found materials—including Q-tips, makeup sponges, bubble wrap, string, lace, leaves, and more—to create unexpected textures, layered patterns, and one-of-a-kind prints. This rotating format offers plenty of opportunities to try multiple approaches, discover new favorites, and gather inspiration from fellow participants. No drawing or printmaking experience is necessary; the emphasis is on exploration rather than perfection.

You’ll have the opportunity to transform your favorite prints into personalized greeting cards and leave with ideas for applying these techniques to wrapping paper, wall art, journals, collage, and other creative projects at home. More than anything, this workshop invites you to embrace surprise, follow your curiosity, and enjoy the process of making. Every print is an experiment, every layer a discovery, and every mark uniquely your own!

📚 🍄 🌈 ☀️ This July we are so grateful for the mycelial connections that bring us together! Celebrating an abundance of incredible literary offerings that grow beyond the page. We are excited to welcome author, educator, and mycophile, Maria Pinto @aravensgrace to Pittsburgh to share from her powerful new book, Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless: What Fungi Taught Me about Nourishment, Poison, Ecology, Hidden Histories, Zombies and Black Survival on Thursday, July 16th at 7pm at @whitewhalebks. She will be joined in conversation by local writer and illustrious fairy marsh monster Almah LaVon! @agentsubrosa

Naturalist, forager, and educator Maria Pinto offers a stunning debut book that uncovers strange and beautiful fungal connections between the natural and human worlds. She mingles reportage, research, memoir, and nature writing, touching on topics that range from Black farmers’ domestication of the unforgettable aroma of truffles to the possibility that enslaved people wielded mycological poisons against their enslavers. Pinto brings a new perspective and a distinctive literary voice to this mix of environmental and lived history, and every page sings with her enthusiasm for the networks in which we are embedded: fungal, ecological, ancestral, and communal. Join her in pursuit of beautiful, perplexing, delicious, and deadly mushrooms as she explores this understudied kingdom’s awe-inspiring diversity and discovers how fungi have been used by people, especially those on the margins, for survival, pleasure, revelation, and revolution.

White Whale Bookstore and the Flower Farm Residency are grateful to present this collaborative event with the support of @blackunicornlibraryproject, @cuttingroot, @dreamsofhopeorg, @writepittsburgh, @ujamaacollective15219, and @sibylsshrine. The reading & conversation is hosted by local artist, librarian, and educator, Bekezela Mguni.

My performative text has been included in @__firmino__ 's "Through the Obsidian Mirror: Onto-Corporeal Experimentations at Twilight" within the just-released book, Decoloniality in the Break of Global Blackness.

I was truly honored to be included in the cross-border (multilingual, transnational) ceremony with my hermana and many beautiful others. Her article reflects "Oxlaval Aq'b'al" (Ixil Maya, 13 Twilight), a "collaborative multi-sited performance experiment," in which we dreamed, danced, sang, and raged into the twilight, the daily blurrer of binaries and borders. This "durational experiment" included firekeeping -- and the extrajudicial murders of Black folks were at the center of the flame, particularly George Floyd, so the release of this work around the five-year marking of his execution is just....

When @aravensgrace asked me to co-weave a woodland creature photoshoot, I didn't have to get ready because I have been waiting for the invitation my entire life.

You see, Maria is my mycelial familiar (shout-out to the brilliant Zachari Curtis for the phrase!). And she's the author of the forthcoming holy book, Fearless, Sleepless, Deathless!

I wanted to write all of the beautiful words about this debut but The Hyphae holds them all.

See the pinned post at @aravensgrace for preorder info!
