Google just made a major quantum computing breakthrough, reducing errors by 40× and achieving a record 99.99% fidelity on its Willow quantum chip.

For more than 20 years, one of quantum computing’s biggest challenges has been producing something called “magic states,” special quantum resources needed to perform powerful calculations. The problem? In some proposed designs, manufacturing them could consume up to 95% of a quantum computer’s capacity.

Google has now demonstrated a new technique called magic state cultivation, which grows and improves these states instead of combining large numbers of imperfect ones.

The result is a major step toward more practical quantum computers, potentially helping scientists discover new medicines, design better batteries, and develop materials we can’t easily model today.

There’s still a long way to go before this technology scales, but the implications for the future of computing are fascinating.

OpenAI says it used roughly 10,000 AI agents to tackle Navier–Stokes, one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems, and produced a proposed proof in just 88 hours.

Navier–Stokes describes how fluids like air, water, and blood move, and mathematicians have spent almost 90 years trying to answer a deceptively simple question: can a perfectly smooth fluid eventually cause the equations themselves to break down?

OpenAI says its system found a specific case where that happens.
But the bigger story may be how the discovery happened. OpenAI heard rumors that researchers had made progress on related problems, deployed agents across several directions, then concentrated thousands of them on Navier–Stokes once the signal looked promising.
That has sparked controversy around prior work by mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge, and it raises a much bigger question for open science.
Terence Tao has argued that as machines become capable of generating and testing proofs at massive scale, the scarce resource may no longer be producing the proof itself. It may be identifying which problem and which direction is actually worth pursuing.
