RUNWAY SPOTLIGHT: AVAVAV SS25

Like previous runways from Creative Director Beate Karlsson’s AVAVAV (@avavav), SS25 featured another social commentary, particularly of modern internet, fashion, and sports culture, combined with a humorous, yet beautifully tailored design language and a quirky collaboration with Adidas (@adidas).

The AVAVAV’s SS25 runway was set in the Forza a Corragio arena in Milan, where models tried to break a 100-meter record on the catwalk (a track). Models were seen wearing bandage garments, weird tracksuits, and the iconic three stripes. With an emphasis on deconstruction and experimental styling, the models obviously failed their challenge; leaving what is, a nuanced and structured performance on sports and fashion’s intersect.

Label Anatomy: 11 BY BBS x Salomon

Through years of collaborations between Boris Bidjan Saberi’s sublabel 11 by BBS (@11bybbs ) and outdoor brand Salomon (@salomon ), the two have engineered functional, avant-garde versions of previously loved Salomon shoes and apparel. The two have had a long standing relationship, having their first crossover in 2016, for 11 by BBS’s SS17 collection “Disruptive Disciples.” The shoe that debuted was the Bamba 1, a reimagined version of the Salomon Speedcross matching the brand identity of 11.

Since debuting their collaborative sneaker they have made six more Bamba variants, the Boot 2 GTX, and more recently (2024) the Athletic Bouldering series. All of the shoes feature Sabieri’s signature object dye techniques, all colorways and versions uniquely dyed and retouched by hand. Alongside the dying techniques, Saberi’s Salomon sneakers also included technical prowess, reimagining a more functional trail and outdoor shoe with a Gore-tex upper and waterproof hardware. Alongside footwear, the two have also created technical apparel under Saberi’s design language featuring tops, pants, backpacks, and other accessories.

For now, no future collaborations are in store for the two as Saberi ceased operations for his labels in July 2025.

Brutalismus3000: The Youth’s New Face of Techno

Victoria Vassiliki Daldas and Theo Zeitner are two lovers who met on Tinder in 2018, sharing a common admiration for underground club culture and techno in Berlin. The two began creating tracks in 2020 under the alias Brutalismus 3000, fusing distorted industrial techno with punk-laced vocals. Since emerging in 2020, they have carved out a sound that’s as abrasive as it is addictive, with tracks and live performances featuring Zeitner behind the decks and Daldas on the microphone. Early releases like No Sex With Cops, Good Girl, and Diskotéka Avantgarde laid the foundation, while 2021’s breakout anthem Satan Was a Babyboomer launched the duo onto the global stage. Their Boiler Room sets also contributed to fueling virality, energy, and a raw live-presence.

B3K has become one of electronic music’s most talked-about acts and one of the defining breakthrough artists of the 2020s, introducing a new generation to the techno scene, all stemming from the underground of Berlin.

Legendary Leathers: The Designer Behind Daft Punk’s Most Iconic Looks

Before fashion and music became as synonymous as they are today, Daft Punk (@daftpunk) bridged the gap between the two with the help of legendary designer Hedi Slimane (@hedislimane). Together, the two creative forces redefined the relationship between fashion and music. More than simply dressing the electronic duo, Hedi played a pivotal role in shaping Daft Punk’s visual identity, which has become inseparable from their legacy. From the custom embellished Dior Homme leather jackets to the more refined Saint Laurent looks, their long-term collaboration demonstrated how the two artistic mediums could become extensions of one another, further elevating an artist’s persona as a whole. Today, their partnership remains a major influence on the countless collaborations between music and fashion that continue to shape pop culture.

In less than a decade, Kiko Kostadinov (@kikokostadinov) has established himself as one of the most forward-pushing designers in fashion. His earliest work came with Stüssy via "Displacement," a collection built around reworked garments. He later launched his eponymous label in 2016 garnering attention for his technical and unique design philosophy with clear inspirations from street wear. Refusing to follow the traditional pathway of creating a visual design philosophy Kostadinov likes to begin each collection from scratch, which has allowed him to world build amongst his own ideology of aesthetics.

LABEL ANATOMY: KOZABURO @kozaburo_kopi @wave_of_sand @hok_prm_kzbr

Kozaburo is one of loudest voices in contemporary fashion. Founded by Japanese designer Kozaburo Akasaka, the label based in NYC has gained recognition for reinterpreting Western silhouettes through garment deconstruction, traditional Japanese tailoring, and a constant dedication to experimentation. The brand has now expanded its creative language past their seasonal collections through collaborations with names such as Wrangler, Schott NYC, and Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack.

Central to the label’s philosophy is Wave of Sand and Phantom Ranch Market, which both offer more specific takes on the brand identity. Wave of Sand is a utility based brand encouraging the youth to be free and take initiative. On another spectrum, PRM is an ongoing line dedicated to reconstructing vintage and mainline clothes through unique techniques, most notably with staples as seen on the stitch-caps.

The Iron Cross: Fashion’s Most Controversial and Misunderstood Motif

Controversial symbols have long been a subject of debate in the world of fashion, and one of the most prominent examples is the Iron Cross. Originally introduced as a military decoration, the emblem has evolved through centuries of warfare, political change, and cultural reinterpretation. Although the symbol itself predates the Nazi regime by centuries, its use during World War II permanently altered its public perception, making it one of history’s most recognizable—and controversial—symbols.
In the modern era, the Iron Cross has been adopted by numerous subcultures, including biker, heavy metal, punk, and skate communities. Over time, this cultural adoption led to its integration into contemporary fashion, where many designers have reinterpreted the symbol across garments, jewelry, and accessories. More often than not, its striking visual form is emphasized over its complex historical context. Brands such as Enfants Riches Déprimés have consistently incorporated the motif alongside other post-war and countercultural references, using it as part of a broader visual language.
While some view the Iron Cross’s continued presence in fashion as a reclamation of its visual identity, others argue that its use risks trivializing or aestheticizing a deeply controversial history. Regardless of perspective, the Iron Cross serves as a compelling example of how symbols can evolve over time while continuing to shape discussions surrounding context, intent, and cultural memory.

Hussein Chalayan: Fashion’s Architect of Memory

Hussein Chalayan transformed fashion into a medium for storytelling, redefining the runway as a space for exploring identity, migration, technology, and the meaning of home. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the Cyprus-born, London-based designer challenged traditional ideas of fashion, creating garments that carried political and emotional narratives rather than existing solely as objects of beauty.

Among his most celebrated works is his collection, Afterwords (F/W 2000). Inspired by the displacement of people during conflict, Chalayan imagined the urgency of abandoning one’s home with only what could be carried. The show began as a modest living room before models transformed furniture into clothing: chair covers became dresses, wooden chairs turned into wearable pieces, and the finale featured a coffee table unfolding into a sculptural skirt.

These transformations symbolized the experience of carrying home when home no longer exists. More than a display of technical ingenuity, Afterwords explored memory, survival, and belonging with remarkable restraint. Its emotional resonance cemented its place as one of fashion’s most iconic collections.

Chalayan’s innovative blend of fashion, architecture, and social commentary continues to inspire designers today, proving that clothing can be as intellectually powerful as it is visually striking.

Faye Wong: Hong Kong’s Original Fashion Disruptor

Faye Wong, famously titled the “Queen of Cantopop,” pioneered the embrace of avant-garde fashion within Hong Kong’s mainstream cultural landscape. She was a contradiction rendered in cloth and sound: a Beijing-born artist who became the defining face of Hong Kong in the 1990s.

At a time when the city’s entertainment industry was dominated by polished glamour and carefully curated celebrity personas, Wong introduced an entirely new visual language. She fearlessly embraced experimental fashion, defied commercialism, and cultivated an image that felt instinctive rather than manufactured.

Behind Wong’s revolutionary curation of looks was renowned stylist Titi Kwan. Kwan spotlit a lineup of visionary designers such as Raf Simons, Ann Demeulemeester, Yohji Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten, etc. Drawing heavily from the cerebral world of Belgian avant-garde, Wong became synonymous with deconstructed tailoring and asymmetrical silhouettes that prioritized concept over convention. Together, Wong and Kwan reshaped the visual identity of Hong Kong pop culture, proving that fashion could exist not merely as spectacle, but as a form of artistic and cultural expression.

Faye Wong later became the beloved muse of Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar-Wai, whose cinematic lens amplified the magnetic pull of her style, creating some of the most captivating looks of the decade.
