Extreme sports taught me more than University. (Talent doesn’t matter)

In my teens and early 20s aggressive inline skating (aka blading) was the only thing I really cared about.

When you obsess over something for years, you start noticing patterns.
I want to talk about Talent!

My take is that there’s no such thing as being talented in any specific discipline. Whether it’s skating, music or motion design.

I observed if someone was really good at technical grind tricks, the skater wasn’t naturally as good at doing big spins or flips. So who’s the better skater? The one who does insane tech grinds on handrails or the one who does crazy flips? - There’s no clear answer.

The same principle applies to any other discipline.

Let’s talk about drawing. Who’s a better illustrator - the one who can render photorealistic scenes from imagination or the one who does stick figures, but comes up with killer ideas? Those are extreme examples, but you get the idea.

There’s a guy in inline skating that nobody tried to copy when he was really young. His moves were really stiff and people considered him not the greatest talent, although he did super technical stuff. Years later he refined his “stiff moves” and transformed his shortcoming into his signature style and is considered an absolute legend these days.

As a kid, I never thought I had talent for drawing and never imagined I’ll use this skill for business. But drawing like skating - isn’t one skill! It’s a collection of skills. And you can improve any of them. by @agriscaurs

A little autumn piece from 2020.

I worked on it while visiting Mara’s parents in the countryside. Apples and chamomiles were drying on the table, trees waving through the window as I drew the leaves one after another.
