✨Congratulations to Charlotte Simmons who has been awarded the Act Belong Commit People's Choice Award for her work titled 'Echoes of Choeung Ek'. ✨ Simmons says of her work, "My artwork highlights Cambodia’s contemporary history involving the Khmer Rouge regime. The woman, whilst having experienced the genocide of her people, acts as a motif of hope. I have incorporated Khmer writing and mixed media in the background to create a murky textural surface to represent the largest killing field in Cambodia, Choeung Ek. It acts as a subtle reminder that power can decay human morality and that such atrocities can happen in our lifetime." You can view the work in The West Australian Pulse until this Sunday 24 July. Are you a natural performer? A lover of improvisation? We're on the lookout for volunteers who aren't afraid to experiment and engage with audiences of all ages. You will play a vital role in helping audiences experience WA artist Danielle Freakley's work called 'Equal Opportunity to be a Dictator'during The View From Here exhibition season. Cats always have a way of making themselves at home. 🐈 For cross-media artist @bruno_booth_ these feline friends are used to highlight how humans relate to artwork and formal public spaces like galleries and museums. Sometimes it's with ease, other times with a sense of awkwardness, inferiority or unequal accessibility. And Booth would know: as an artist whose practice addresses the challenges and possibilities of negotiating the world from a wheelchair, he has a skill for illuminating the cultural and physical relationships. In 'Feline good, HBU?' Booth's technicolour family of 34 laser-cut and powder coated cats 🐈‍⬛ 🐈will pop up in unlikely locations throughout AGWA. While exhibiting familiar cat-like postures (sleeping, reaching, slinking), they pose questions about the ways that cultural institutions influence who sees their work and how. "I'd never consider myself an activist or anything like that; I'm just an artist with an opinion." - Abdul Abdullah.   Poetic, political, punchy and provocative – just a few words used to describe the work of young Perth-born artist @abdul_abdullah. Often sparking a strong emotional response in audiences (and more than a bit of controversy), Abdullah's work explores his worldview as a seventh-generation Australian Muslim who grew up in suburban Perth and now resides in Sydney.
