Held from 5-8 October 2026 in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam, 19 disaster management professionals from across ASEAN gathered for the 4th ASCEND Competency Assessment. As part of the assessment, candidates underwent face-to-face evaluations across four professional competency areas: Rapid Assessment, Humanitarian Logistics, Information Management, and WASH.

Hosted by the National Disaster Management Centre (NDMC) of Brunei Darussalam, the assessment was followed by an After-Action Review (AAR) Workshop, where assessors and experts reflected on lessons learned, explored ways to strengthen quality assurance mechanisms, and reviewed proposed Continuing Professional Development (CPD) pathways to support future certification renewal and the continuous growth of ASCEND-certified professionals.

The AHA Centre extends its sincere appreciation to the Government of the Republic of Korea, through the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF), for its continued support in advancing capacity building in disaster management for a stronger and more resilient disaster management community across ASEAN.

On 13 October, ASEAN commemorates the ASEAN Day for Disaster Management and International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

As One ASEAN, One Response marks its 10th anniversary this year, we recognise the value of regional cooperation in disaster management. Through close cooperation among ASEAN Member States and partners, ASEAN continues to strengthen disaster preparedness, reduce disaster risks, and protect communities across the region.

The AHA Centre supports these efforts by serving as ASEAN's hub for disaster coordination, facilitating capacity building, information sharing, resource mobilisation, and ASEAN's collective response to disasters.

What does AI mean for disaster response?

During our latest ASEAN-ERAT Coffee Chat on "AI-Powered Disaster Management: Work Smarter, Respond Faster,” 38 ASEAN-ERAT members from across the region came together online to explore how AI can support faster, smarter disaster management. From ethical considerations to real-world experiences and lessons from actual deployments, the discussion offered valuable insights on how AI can strengthen our daily work and field operations.

A big thank you to our speakers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force @myscdf and United Nations OCHA Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific @ochaasiapac for sharing their insights and experiences!

This was followed by the Regional Training Needs Assessment (TNA) Validation Workshop on 23 September 2026, which brought together ACDM WG on GL Co-Chairs and members to validate findings across the areas of People, Processes, Places, and Policies, ensuring the assessment reflects the current and future capacity development needs of ASEAN Member States.

The outcomes of both events will contribute to the finalisation of the Regional TNA and support the implementation of the ASEAN Capacity Building Roadmap 2025–2030, further strengthening regional disaster management capabilities and advancing ASEAN’s vision of becoming a global leader in disaster management. by @ahacentre
