POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
So this happened today. I’m always grateful when one of our projects gets published. It’s actually not easy to realise any design after years of work and it takes a particular type of client - 100% supportive - to realise their dreams but also share in the journey. What’s even more special is I’ve been doing this now for 19 years in my own practice. So for our first ever cover I’m so happy it was this project @deepwaterhouse for our clients James and Anne. The thing about James was his enthusiasm - never abated, always positive and he’s kind of an Archi Nerd truth be told - he loves what Architecture can do. He gave me the nicest compliment not long back - he said the house has improved his family. What more can I ask for than that? On the journey Adam from @wandoobuilding and his team were tirelessly awesome in the build execution. He even volunteered as our swimming pool super model for the photo shoot! @alexandrafarrington gave us this great garden, executed by Phil Hogan the tree whisperer. The project is a collaborative effort and not surprisingly has the key tripartite of Architect, Client + Builder working towards the same goal. It sounds easy enough but in reality it’s really hard work! Special mention also to Domenic Trimboli who wrote this review - lovely insights and he’s succinctly described my internal thoughts into a piece that resonates strongly with me. Also a big thanks as always to @robfrith who has shot every project I’ve built - he has a great eye and continues to always take the best shots when I’m distracted and not trying to tell him how to do his job. This cover shot is testament to that. Thanks Rob! Thankyou also to the @architects_wa for including this project and #filterhouse_aha not to long ago - it’s appreciated! taken in Deep Water Point Mt Pleasant by @ahastudio_

Back in the Studio this week @ahastudio_ While we took holidays our #deepwaterhouse_aha was featured in @housesmagazine Issue #155. Thanks to @alexakempton and the team for welcoming our Studio back into the pages of Houses. We’re delighted it was this project for our clients James + Anne that was chosen to be part of the issue titled “In Good Company”. There’s multiple meanings for us in this - back in the good company of peers, but also the importance housing plays in all our lives and the landscapes that we chose to live and dwell in.

From the editor @alexakempton :

“Our neighbourhoods are dotted with unofficial local landmarks. The red brick apartments on the corner, the tiny terrace with the fragrant garden, the milk bar with the striped awning that provides a welcome moment of shade. The places we live are defined by more than just the physical buildings we call home. So how can the design of private houses continue to enrich the public realm?”

This issue of Houses considers the reciprocal relationship between house and street.

For us this house is about the relationship between habitable space and landscape and the locality were the key themes. Check out Issue #155 to read Rachael Bernstone of @sounds_like_design providing the 🖊️ insights into how we did it!

A big thankyou to our wonderful team and collaborators!

THE MARSHALL CLIFTON AWARD FOR RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURE
- HOUSES (NEW)
This category is proudly sponsored by @midland_brick
Project: Deepwater House
By: AHA Studio @ahastudio_ | Photos: Rob
Frith @robfrith
From the Jury:
“Deepwater House is uncannily long, thin, land-hugging and garden-seeking.
Employing an elongated L-shaped plan, the private domain stretches the length of the site, separated from the street by a shorter public wing.
It reminds us of the value of suburban life, primarily where house and garden are weighted as equals.”

A snapshot of Perth’s vibrant architectural scene. Not only did we take out the Marshall Clifton Award but I was also Jury Head for the Alterations + Additions Category. The Peter Overman Award went to Craig Nener from @grotto.studio for his wonderful Shadow House. A worthy recipient. Next to that is the wonderful Forbes Residences project by @mjastudio @woha_architects on the same southern river side as #deepwaterhouse_aha . The state is in good hands I feel. Hopefully we will give the East Coast some good competition come National Awards time.

On Friday night we had the huge honour winning the Marshall Clifton Award for Residential Architecture Houses - New. This is the first time @ahastudio_ has taken out this award and we couldn’t be more chuffed it was #deepwaterhouse_aha Great to share this award with Adam from @wandoobuilding and James @deepwaterhouse our client.
Huge thanks to @architects_wa for hosting the night and awards organisation and a special thanks to the Judges for recognising us amongst a revered field of Architects we have long admired. It’s wonderful to win in what was a stellar field. We’d also like to thank our great team of collaborators on the project including @alexandrafarrington and Phil Hogan for the wonderful landscape, Paul Terpkos from Terpkos Engineering and Rob Frith @robfrith for his wonderful photography. A special thank you also to all of Adam’s trades who contributed to what was a great build process - too many to name - but Ed and Crew at @crewselectricalservice, Steve for Joinery and George at @avantiglass_ . Special mention as well to our long time collaborators @midland_brick for the concrete blocks - Clive, Chris and Duncan - thankyou 🙏 Also @worldwide_timber_traders for the Plywood and Mark at Benchmark for all the cabinetry. The exciting news for our studio is we are about to start the build for Deepwater 2 next door for James’ parents! Stay tuned!
