Studio Visit with Frank WANG Yefeng @this.frank.wang
🏜️between desert and studio
📍 Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY 11201

While Frank was in residence at Triangle @trianglenyc, I dropped by his studio to catch up — and ended up in a conversation about deserts, disorientation, and nomadic thinking.

The video traces some of that: how a trip to the Gobi Desert — vast, empty, impossible to hold onto — became the seed for Groundless Flower. How getting lost sometimes leads to the real work.

Frank’s upcoming solo, Avatopology 2.0, opens this September at Asian Arts Initiative in Philly @asianartsphilly .Curated by Joyce Chung.

Frank WANG Yefeng (b. 1984) is a transdisciplinary artist lives and works in New York, United States and Shanghai, China. His practice navigates the instability of identity, place, and perception, shaped by his experiences of migration and cultural displacement. He works across video, 3D animation, installation, sculpture, painting, drawing, and text, constructing new worlds that explore the tensions of belonging and estrangement.

Spent some time in Frank’s studio — video coming next.

Studio Visit with Sharon Cheuk Wun Lee @sharonleecw
 🌫️still in transit

Visiting Sharon Lee’s studio, I kept thinking about how things move — not just physically, but through time and meaning.

An old photo is edited, recolored, retold. A flower with no seeds survives by being grafted. Light hits an aluminum surface and shifts what we see.

Hong Kong, New York — stories remembered, misread, reimagined.

Everything in Sharon’s work feels like it’s caught mid-transformation — not fixed, but always becoming.

It left me thinking about what stays with us, what changes, and how we hold onto things even as they move.

This ongoing research and pursuit is Sharon’s way of tracing identity, resilience, and transformation.

Sharon’s debut solo exhibition is coming up in January 2026.

Studio Visit with Sharon Cheuk Wun Lee @sharonleecw
📍 Bushwick, Brookly, NY 11237

Visited Sharon while she was working at the TNT Residency by Transmitter and @tsa_ny. We talked about her public piece at the Hong Kong Botanical Garden — a quiet intervention that turns a fountain into a space for shared wishes.

On sunny days around 3pm, a rainbow appears in the fountain. Sharon installed the text “here lies the rainbow for a wishful thinkers” beside it and invited people to make a wish, documenting each wishmaker with a Polaroid — the colors shifting with temperature, becoming part of the work.

What started as a one-year commission ended up staying — it’s now a permanent installation. A small, fleeting moment, made into something people return to.

Sharon holds an MFA (2025) from Columbia University, as well as an MFA (2022) and a BFA (2016) from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. She has presented solo exhibitions at Kyoto Art Center (KG+ SELECT, 2023) and Lumenvisum (Hong Kong, 2017). Her work has recently been shown at Galerie du Monde; The LeRoy Neiman Gallery; Below Grand; WMA; HART Haus; Tai Kwun Contemporary; and The Listening Biennial.

More from the studio visit soon.

Studio Visit with Mira Dayal @miradayal
🪢 solving with string

Here’s the short video from my visit with Mira.

She talks about returning to one of her earliest tactile memories — the cat’s cradle string figure — and how that simple loop of string became the starting point for steel sculptures, diagrams, and a DIY printmaking process.

It’s problem-solving through touch, materials, and intuition.

Starting in mid-December, Mira will be showing her work in India for the first time in a two-person exhibition at Mehrab Bookshop @mehrabbookshop .

Studio Visit with Mira Dayal @miradayal
📍 Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY 11206

I visited Mira’s studio, where sculpture seems to start even before anything takes shape — in language, diagrams, and systems of logic.

Her works raise the kinds of questions I love: When does a line become a volume? When does a tool become a toy? How can a sculpture be both minimal and expansive, both hard to see and impossible to ignore?

In her hands, flat materials like metal sheets, string, and paper turn into strange hybrids — diagrams, maquettes, even jokes. They echo the spaces around them while quietly shifting how we read, measure, or move through them.

A short video is coming next.

Studio Visit with Anna Ting Möller @annatingmoller
🌱 Seeds of Works

Besides her interest in Romanesco (shared in the last post), Anna, in her current @bolsterarts studio, shares a few more ideas she’s been spending time with — grafting, mistranslations, textures, surfaces.

Some might turn into works; some might stay as thoughts. Not everything needs to become a finished piece — sometimes it’s about seeing where things start.

Anna will also be part of a group show at KAPOW @kapowgallery this December.
.
Anna Ting Möller lives and works between New York City and Stockholm. She holds an MFA in Visual Art (installation and expanded practices) from Columbia University (2023), and a BFA from Konstfack University in Stockholm (2018).

Studio Visit with Anna Ting Möller @annatingmoller
📍Chinatown, New York NY 10002

Anna is currently a resident artist with BolsterArts @bolsterarts . During our visit, she shared a few ideas that have been growing in the studio.

One of them brings together Romanesco broccoli, Mia Farrow, and Marcus Aurelius — a mix of form, mythology, and restraint.

It’s just one seed among others. These are two images Anna shared from her studio. A short video is coming next, with more from the visit.

Studio Visit with Mitch Patrick @mitchpatrick
🗺️ Found Language

While in residency at Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo, Mitch created a new set of glyphs — drawn from small, overlooked objects found around the park. Each shape became part of a visual language built through repetition, memory, and place.

Here’s a glimpse into that process.

Mitch‘s solo exhibition is coming up sometime in early 2026.

Studio Visit with Mitch Patrick @mtchptrck
📍 Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY 11220

In Mitch Patrick’s Brooklyn studio, pixels become material. From looping animations to 3D-printed forms built from old photographs, his work moves across media — drawing, video, sculpture — always returning to the strange space between image and language, screen and time.

Mitch studied at the University of Montevallo and received his MFA from Brooklyn College. His practice touches on everything from asemic typography to digital performance, mapping out how we see and process visual information in the screen age.

Mitch spent the summer in Japan as an artist-in-residence at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio — I was excited to hear more about it.

More soon.

Studio Visit with Julia García @__joolz
⏱️ One Chance

Julia works fast — with water, ink, and acrylic straight onto raw canvas. Things move, shift, blur. You only get one shot before it settles.

During our visit, she shared how she thinks through surface, timing, and chance — and how water becomes more like a collaborator than just a material.

Julia will present new works with @gaagallery at Art Cologne @artcolognefair , opening next week.

Studio Visit with Julia García @__joolz
📍Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY 11232

I stopped by Julia’s studio recently and spent some time with her new works — they feel open and grounded at the same time. She paints with acrylic and ink on raw canvas, letting water seep, spread, and shape each surface. It’s a process that reflects where she’s from — Florida’s wetlands and the way they’ve been gradually shaped by development.

Julia studied at SVA and later got her MFA from MICA. She had her first institutional solo show in Cologne in 2023, and her work has been shown in New York, Miami, Spain, and St. Paul.

More soon — a short video from the visit next week.
