“Caiu aqui um meteoro. Um buraco gigante no meio da sala e tudo arde em volta de uma pedra fluorescente. Há burburinhos, o choque abala o espaço e num silêncio repentino ouve-se um mugido. De dentro da pedra sai uma coisa malhada, imponente e com um ar sábio. Fala e fala português, até com algum sotaque, diria. Conta-nos histórias de galáxias distantes e como a falta de pasto no vácuo fez com que criasse interesse na linguagem. Aprendeu a ler com Platão, o único livro no meteoro e agora pergunta quem somos e se temos planícies por perto. O lavrador mais experiente leva-a até ao verde e assim que a primeira pata toca a relva, a vaca abandona a fala. Limita-se a pastar, olhar desinteressada para o seu redor e voltar a pastar. Na sala do impacto sente-se um cheiro intenso a esterco e aos poucos a pedra vai-se desintegrando, unindo-se com o chão e
com as paredes, fertilizando pensamentos.”

Far, Far Away — Anastasia Kuznetsova’s first solo show — opened yesterday at A Homem Mau. On view until June 12.

The title comes from her own text: a childhood spent far away, in grey blocks, her head somewhere else entirely. As she writes, “I realised that there would be only one person who could do this. She is far far away, but I can come closer.” This exhibition is that walk closer.
The open sketchbooks show what people often forget: her talent is work. Clean line, anatomy right on the first pass, portraits resolved in a handful of strokes. That’s the technical floor everything else is built on.
Then comes colour: first inside the sketchbooks, still in quick gesture, then in the paintings. And with colour comes distortion: impossible viewpoints, scales that bend the real, monumental figures that look like they walked out of a poster and quietly laugh at it. A giant fish staring down a tiny woman. A red figure in high heels against the sky. A face seen from below under a banana flower.
The whole process is on the walls, pencil studies, sketches, and then the finished works next to them.

Anastasia hid nothing. She showed how she got there.

The idea of this exhibition started with drawings I did some time ago. I got a studio and overcame my fear of painting on big canvases during last months. It’s my first exhibition in life and I’m excited to open this door and show you my world.

From the coast of Sri Lanka where I made my first works to Portugal where I became myself. Everything that I do today feels right. I’m exactly where I am supposed to be doing a thing I love the most. And I just want to stop for a moment, observe it and celebrate.

FAR FAR AWAY

“ I’ve been far away since I was a kid. Normal life was moving around. Sitting in my mom’s car, while it unfreezes, so I can go to school. Watching through the window, during the math test, because I couldn’t solve it anyways. Walking to the art classes through continuous grey russian blocks. But my head was far away.

It all started when my mom introduced me to fantasy books, it made me realize that I could, imagine anything and live part time in that world.

In my fantasy world I was always older, stronger, taller. I had a lot of super-powers and could protect myself and others.

Growing up I realised how far away I was getting from all that I imagined. I was not fantasising anymore like I used to as a child, but I lived in the illusion that someone would come and save me.

I realised that there would be only one person who could do this. She is far far away, but I can come closer.”

Every story has a beginning.

A single moment that sparks a chain of events—an ignition.

For CiReine, this ignition began 18 months ago when we started interviewing artists in their studios using five questions inspired by the senses, now known as the 5Q.

Today, we want to thank all the artists who chose to be part of this growing community, and especially the 22 artists who joined IGNITION, the first chapter in the 5Q Story exhibition series.

Thank you as well to everyone who came to support the opening, the exhibition, and the artists who made it possible.

A special thank you to A Homem Mau @ahomemmau for opening their doors and hosting this first chapter with us. And to Delancia (@delanciawines) for helping make these openings feel special with their delicious wine.
