someone close asked me to recommend them a fiction book to read recently as they hadn’t picked one up in close to 10 years - had me GASSED. so i went to our shed and looked through a box containing some of the literature i loved reading most as a teen/early adult. took me down memory lane man…it was so cool looking back at some of the greatest tools in my life which helped define so much of who i am today. forever grateful.

fiction’s greatest benefit, will always be the access it grants one to step into a world completely unrelated to their own on one hand, whilst offering you some unique perspectives that can/will shape your current version of reality…if you’ll let it. it’s in the exploration of the text that you become transformed, not the extraction of a point.

the recent release of The Odyssey as written and directed by Homer/Christopher Nolan is an incredible example of this. here we have a poem, over 3000 years old, with lessons in myth and morality still applicable to our world today. this is what Dr. Peterson means when he says ‘fiction is hyper-real’. its ability, when at its best, to capture, store and reflect back to the reader the essence of the world(s) in which we inhabit, is unrivalled and unparalleled.

i will die on the hill of all great fiction being declared as the best guide for us to engage with life as companion, guide and advisor. whether it’s a religious text, or a classic book, or your 5 years old brother’s first short story, great fiction allows for you to be fully human in ways no other thing can.

I do believe it’s true that ‘nice’ guys are not (all) good guys…

This was a FANTASTICally executed horror movie. From beginning to end, it held my attention in a way I haven’t experienced since watching Sinners. It has moments that are truly terrifying and thrilling, as all well done horror movies do - however, the most chilling thing for me was watching the unravelling of Bear’s character and all the consequences that came with it.

I don’t address it in the video, but there is a scene where he is engaging sexually with ‘Nikki’ in a way that would be more appropriately defined as r*pe/SA. It’s a brutal scene, explicit in its rendering of Bear’s whole purpose in engaging with this now shell of a woman; he wants a being bent completely to his will and desires. It’s grotesque and becomes more so the more I think about it.

This movie is a commentary on male relationships with female bodies and boundaries. Perhaps Nikki only wanted friendship, and Bear’s search for more was an imposition beyond the line she was drawing in the sand. Perhaps she could have fancied him also and was waiting for an initiated confirmation from him. Either way, He doesn’t see her as human and thus autonomous enough to respect either. He displaces the lack of control he feels regarding things in his own life, unto a wish that subjugated and ultimately destroyed that of another.

it is not alien to hear a man say ‘i don’t feel like celebrating my birthday cah i don’t feel like i’ve accomplished enough this year’ - this is the easiest tell on how we tend to view our value/worth in relation to existence.

when i say ‘fiction helped me to learn how to be’, i don’t mean that i found some secret alternative way to learning to live as a man. i mean that the simple practice of intaking information without the pressure of performance, allows for a kind of perspective shift; you begin to notice other, maybe more important things in/about the world/yourself. life feels more peaceful that way.

there are self-help/productivity books that have actually helped me also, i don’t think they’re bad lol. by @ai.sosa

it was on a cold friday morning, on my way to what would be an 8 to 10 hour WORK day, supporting a family i work with in a time of real crisis, that i made the off-kilter decision to give samara cyn’s newest EP a spin.

the verdict: blown away.

considering how often music drops and how accessible it’s all become, that rare feeling of surprise from novelty, feels like a high not worth the chase anymore.

until an artist of miss cyn’s calibre shows up and shows out, proving that evolution and experimentation are ideals still worth exploring excellently.

with vocal inflections reminiscent of thugger, balance of lyricism and melody mirroring a montell fish and daniel caesar and stimming patterns that would give kendrick’s GNX a run for it’s money l, svn4vr is a vast collage of artistry unlike anyone you’ve ever heard.

i still remember the first time @tidezofficial showed me @svnhiding music and i KNEW i was going to be obsessed for a hot sec. this video is the product of that encounter and the ensuing hours spent listening to every single track i could find by him. this experience is rare for me so when it occurs, i treasure it deeply.

svn4vr’s music is both gritty and angelic. likely due to his ‘rough around the edges’ approach to production/recording combined with what i can only assume to be a God given vocal register. he is boundary-less. truly. and i can’t wait to witness how high he rises with his music.

@svnhiding if this video somehow makes it round to you - i just want you to know that what you’re doing is incredibly special bro. music made by black boys ain’t gotta look or sound a certain way and you’re living proof of what it looks and sounds like to do that excellently. thank you for your art. legit changed my life. by @ai.sosa

for context: the YP wanted drill music played so we’re playing that in the whip. i was in a bubble jacket with grey joggers and a skully and i’m still on my first whip so it ain’t the most glamorous thing lol. that police officer definitely thought i was exploiting that kid. if i wasn’t in such shock from what was happening in real time they would’ve had to arrest me for the way i would’ve spoken to him kmt. but yh man. day in the life sh*t. by @ai.sosa
