AIARE courses provide a lot of information, and if it’s all new, it can feel overwhelming, but AIARE shouldn’t be scary! We asked a few of our instructors to share their tips on preparing for your first course so that you are best set up to get the most out of it!
Your instructor’s goal is to set you up for success by getting to know the group’s abilities and goals and adjusting the day's plan to make the most of the experience. If you have any concerns before your course reach out to your provider for recommendations. Courses are still available! Find one near you through our link in bio. by @aiare_official

You took the course. You learned the skills. You haven’t practiced them in a while.

The new AIARE 1 Refresher is a one-day, field-based course for backcountry travelers with prior avalanche training who know that skills don’t maintain themselves.
Revisit the fundamentals, sharpen your decision-making, and get back in the field with partners who are on the same page.

Avalanche education isn’t something you finish. It’s something you practice. You can find a full list of AIARE providers offering the AIARE 1 Refresher course in the 🔗 in our bio.

A big year for AIARE 🎉 Despite one of the weakest snow years in recent history, 8,403 students took an AIARE recreational course in 2025–26, demonstrating the continued demand for avalanche education.

We also continued building the next generation of avalanche educators, with 116 new instructors and course leaders completing AIARE’s educator training and 137 students completing AIARE Professional Training to advance their careers in the snow industry.

And we put our mission into action, awarding $48,400 in scholarships to help make avalanche education accessible to more people.

Perhaps our most exciting milestone: we launched Avalanche Aware alongside our friends at @coavalancheinfo and @nwacus. This free, self-paced online course introduces new backcountry users to the basics of avalanche safety. Available in both human-powered and motorized versions, Avalanche Aware is creating a new entry point into avalanche education and reaching people who have had little or no formal avalanche training. by @aiare_official

“It’s just a mellow slope...”
“There are already tracks on it...”
“My buddy knows what he’s doing...”

In the backcountry, these are the famous last words of the Human Factor—and they are the biggest traps we fall into. ❄️🧠

A lot of people think taking an avalanche course is just about memorizing snow science or digging pits. But the reality? It’s about building the ultimate toolkit to keep you and your crew alive.

Here is why getting avalanche educated is a non-negotiable:
🔍 You see the invisible: You learn to spot terrain traps, measure slope angles (30-40 degrees is the sweet spot for slides), and read the active warning signs the mountain is giving you.
⏱️ You become a lifeline: If your partner gets buried, you have roughly 15 minutes. An rescue course builds the frantic, high-stress muscle memory you need to find, probe, and shovel them out in time.
🧠 You outsmart your own brain: You’ll learn how to identify mental traps—like assuming a slope is safe just because someone else rode it—and how to communicate as a group without ego.
🌲 More education = MORE powder: Knowing how to read the forecast doesn’t keep you on the couch on high-danger days. It tells you exactly where you can safely find deep, low-angle, worry-free powder.

Stop guessing.

Start knowing.Sign up for a course this season—your partners (and your family) will thank you. 🏔️👇

Where can a scholarship lead?

“I hope to take my technical knowledge as well as familiarity with the process and serve as a mentor to other new professionals.”— Josie Bourne, 2025 PRO Scholarship awardee.

The impact of avalanche education extends far beyond a single course. Scholarship recipients continue to strengthen snow safety programs, support their communities, and help develop the next generation of avalanche professionals.

Thank you to @arcteryx and @scarpana for investing in the future of avalanche education.

Scholarship applications are due August 23. by @aiare_official
