Finding her

Amidst the chaotic world of high school, I never truly felt comfortable in my own skin. Sure, I felt pretty or hot, but it never felt like it was me. This left me questioning my identity, wondering, “Who am I?” Fitting into gendered roles in all the activities I participated in was challenging. I didn’t want to be the best boy at something because I didn’t feel accomplished. Deep down, I knew that boy wasn’t me. It always felt like an invisible weight was holding me back from truly enjoying the things I loved because I did them as a boy.

It wasn’t until the end of this year that I finally realized this. I found myself wishing I could just close my eyes and wake up as a girl. I never wanted to say that because I was comfortable (and good) in what I was doing, and switching it up would have been a hassle for everyone. My transness was a hassle. I also met a new friend my senior year. This friend was the mean girl Regina George of my school—Gender Dysmorphia. She would whisper things in my ear, like, “You should feel ashamed of wearing that because that’s something a boy would wear” and “Don’t wear a dress to prom because that’s not what everyone knows you as. They know you as the feminine gay boy, not the woman you are.”

I also felt a deep pain in my soul whenever people would toss out unknowing “he”s or “sirs.” It was hard for me to pinpoint the feeling of discomfort anytime those lifelong titles were said. I was so comfortable in my “he/him” box because it was scary to step outside and explore the wonderful truth of my being. Now, I’m just realizing that being trans isn’t a burden; it’s a blessing.

I’ve been learning her language since forever, whether it was wearing dresses while Allie and I played princesses or starting a makeup YouTube channel. Becoming a woman was a lifelong journey, even though I didn’t know the name for it. The warm, fuzzy feeling in my heart when I tap into the woman I am is something I chase. Becoming authentically me is an elation.

So what does this mean? I’m still Aidan. I go by she/her. I’m walking into this next step and I want to bring everyone with me. Transness is joy. by @aidanc0x
