“Come back to yourself ….. to peace,
You are free ….. not lost.”

Do you envy those who are really good at compartmentalising situations and emotions ? I do, am certainly not one of them - when things happen, it’s hard for me to put aside how I feel. All ideas and inspiration completely disappear, I can’t see past the blank paper.

It wasn’t always like this, I used to be able to fully immerse myself in artwork then hours would pass.

Maybe this is a reminder to slow down, take a breath, and find my way back to that calm. These are my art pieces, no pressure to finish them, no anxiety for perfection. They should make me happy.

Take care everyone, may the haze in Singapore leave soon.

This song is so great - Step by Step. Keep moving yes ?

We’re switching the “study” — if you can call it that — into another room. It’s really just a shared space for hubs and I, the room at the back of the flat is a little bigger.

It’s been two years since the home was renovated, and honestly shocking how much stuff has piled up since then. So, here we go again : another round of decluttering madness, sorting through all the things that definitely need to be chucked out.

Sentimental clutter is the hardest to deal with as somehow, everything has a story attached to it. But it’s time, no more avoiding it, just let go.

Have a great week ahead.

Hello, are you doing well ?

Life is messy, and so is art. I sometimes look at those pristine art spaces and beautifully tidy tables and wonder… for real ? Mine certainly isn’t.

Lately, anxiety and worries about my family have been taking their toll. My mother is 86, living with dementia, and currently in hospital with a number of health issues. It’s hard, especially when we are a small family with little support, trying to navigate an illness we’ve never had to face before while also coming to terms with a difficult and uncertain prognosis.

I’d love to be in a happier, lighter place, but sometimes that’s simply not where life is. So for now, we’re taking things day by day — appreciating the moments when things feel a little easier and holding on to those small pockets of calm wherever they are.

Art has always been a small, quiet space to breathe but even this has been slow, I can’t seem to pick up where I’ve left off. Thank goodness for audiobooks, they’ve helped tremendously in luring me to places of imagination.

Thank you for stopping by. Stay well.

Hello everyone, how have you been ?

I’ve not done any florals these past weeks. Things are pretty busy on my end lately — juggling work, a few art commissions, helping out at a SketchUp event, and looking after my mum and her live-in minder, who are staying with us while her home gets a little refresh.

But I’m also really happy because our oldest is finally home from Chicago, and we’ll soon have her friend staying with us too. The house is a little more hectic than usual, and that’s the point of having more space - being able to share it.

Hope life has been treating you kindly, have a good weekend ahead !

Slow life, slow art.

This piece took a while to finish — we even managed to squeeze in a family holiday in between. Sun, sea and lots of good food, it was wonderful !

I’m in my mid-60s, working part-time, and don’t feel the need to fill life with endless activity. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me ? Happiest at home, surrounded by the things I love.

For sure family and good friends are important. They keep us grounded, make us laugh, giving us glimpses into what’s going on in the world and the minds of the next generation. Making the effort to meet up a few times a month is something to look forward to, a reason to make plans and leave the house.

But more and more, home has become a sanctuary — a place of refuge, comfort and peace, a space where there’s no pressure to be anything other than myself. No need to be sociable, no need to perform, and definitely no need to be polite all the time.

Perhaps getting older is about learning to pace our days, to let go of what no longer matters. I’m discovering a quieter life can be a deeply satisfying one. There is no race to win, definitely always time for a calming mug of tea and art

Have a great week ahead.

Artwork for my daughter’s PhD thesis, titled : The microbial ecology of sweet potato initiation and bulking.

It took 5 years. We’ve watched her slog through the years of study: the highs and lows, the uncertainty of choices, the struggle of navigating limited academic support, the politics and culture of NUS, and the countless moments where she had to grit her teeth, pick herself up, and keep going.

Parenting is such a complicated journey. We try our best, guide wherever we can and cheer from the sidelines, but ultimately our children must make their own way to the finish line.

Congratulations, sweetheart, you did it.

The thesis is finished, the journey is complete, and this chapter is finally closed. Now go out and enjoy whatever life brings next. ❤️

This was a pleasure to colour ! I’m usually not a fan of warm reds or darker colours, so this felt like an artistic fence I had to get over.

Cool leaning ruby tones, deep shadows, and touches of blue in the highlights made it really interesting to work on. Not my usual palette, but sometimes stepping outside the comfort zone is where the fun happens.

Started on an A3 piece and taking it slowly. A larger drawing needs patience and attention to detail, and this faded floral study will probably take around 15 hours to complete.

The last few days have been marked by anxiety and some emotional lows. Last night brought a particularly vivid nightmare, with a sense of hopelessness that lingered after waking. It worried me, as I usually hardly ever remember my dreams. Could be age ? Worries about my mum’s escalating Dementia ?

Art really is healing.
It pulls me out of the fog, quiets the noise, and gives my mind somewhere else to rest. With every hour spent drawing, the head feels a little clearer and the weight a little lighter.

Here’s wishing you peace and sunshine for the week ahead.

It’s okay today, like the song says.

This floral piece isn’t perfect. The proportions could be better, and honestly, dark colours aren’t really my thing. But it’s good practice, and there’s always something to learn.

I’m trying to focus on the good things in my life — the parts that keep me afloat like family, friends, hobbies, relatively good health, and a home that feels peaceful.

Enjoy the rest of your week !

I’ll call this Blob no. 1 - the first in what will probably become a whole series. These are playful, unplanned abstracts where I simply add shapes and colours intuitively, letting the piece evolve on its own.

If you’re new to coloured pencils, Blobs are a great place to start. They naturally help you practise layering, blending and understand visual weigh - without the pressure of getting a subject “right.” There’s no need to match a flower or a still life plus the best thing is Blobs means freedom, NO anxiety.

Give it a try.

Finished this piece - an experiment with coloured pencils and ink. Previously I used watercolour and ink, and was curious how ink would behave over the waxy surface of the drawing. Caran D’Ache Luminance pencils are waxed based with a dense pigment.

Glad (surprised as well) to discover the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner glides smoothly on top, with no clogging of the nib from the wax. Also, I used Gamsol over parts of the drawing, the ink did not bleed …. that’s a win !

Art is the texture of our lives—through music, theatre, drawing, and so much more. Imagine how flat our world would feel without it.

You don’t need formal training to begin—I certainly don’t have it. Just a curious mind willing to explore shapes, colours, and the many mediums, it doesn’t have to be expensive. Accept mistakes as learning points, like I’ve used a different paper, the rough has too much teeth and it’s eating the colour leads like crazy. The result is a thick wax with an interesting paint like finish.

Enjoy the process.
Discover what suits your space, your pace, and your budget. Then, slowly, let your skills grow.

Have a great weekend !
