10 October is World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day. At AHF UK, we don’t see these as two separate causes. They are deeply interconnected, and one reflects the other.

Losing a home affects every part of a person’s health. Sleeping rough, moving between hostels or sofa surfing brings stress, isolation and trauma, and makes it harder to eat well, rest, keep appointments and stay on treatment. At the same time, poor health, and especially poor mental health, can be what pushes someone into homelessness in the first place. It is a cycle, and too many people are caught in it.

For people living with or at risk of HIV, homelessness adds another layer. When daily life is about survival, prevention, testing and care can feel out of reach. That is why care has to meet people where they are, with dignity and without judgement.

At AHF UK, we believe HIV prevention, mental health and a safe place to live belong together. Today we celebrate everyone who works to care for the whole person, and everyone with lived experience who reminds us why this matters.

No one should face HIV, homelessness or mental ill health alone.

Some days, managing HIV can feel like more than just taking a pill. 🌿

Today, 10 October, is World Mental Health Day. 💭

Living with HIV can come with stress, worries about disclosure, stigma or simply the exhaustion of having to think about your health over and over again.

And when your mental health is struggling, even everyday things like getting treatment, going to appointments or asking for support can feel harder.

That’s why mental health should be part of HIV care, not something we only talk about when things become overwhelming.

If you’re having a difficult time, reaching out to someone you trust or a healthcare professional can be a good first step. 🤝

There is no single way to feel or heal. And you don’t have to pretend that everything is fine when it isn’t.

This month, we’re making space for more honest conversations about mental health and HIV.

Because sometimes, being heard is a good place to start.
