this piece centers around societal labels/categories. philosophically, i don’t believe that humans naturally fit into these neat, little boxes that society lines up to make people easier to understand. this piece explores the confusing yet completely logical paradox of defying all labels. and of course celebrates queer JOY!

CAPS LOCK, a self-choreographed, work-in-progress solo that i premiered at Uptown Rising at @bridgefordance last month!

to be completely honest, most of my time post-grad has been spent working and not dancing. i don’t have the time or money to make art my priority right now. naturally, i faced the crushing weight of late-stage capitalism the only way i knew how: dancing in my room after a 10 hour shift. that became this piece. i cherish every opportunity i have to dance and to choreograph!

Ailey McDavid closed opening night with “growing apart together” 🌱💫. Set against the Hoboken sunset, the duet floated through Peach Pit’s “Tommy’s Party,” all hushed nostalgia and what‑ifs. Soft pulls, gentle sways, shy smiles. A dream of connection that left us lighter on the grass.

That final breath crowned a lineup of six powerful voices

Sydney’s flowing waves
Willa and Mae’s joyful trust
Denaisha’s subway pulse
Lara’s soaring lift
Ailey’s tender goodbye.
Backstage we traded shoulder rubs and stories, proof that community lives in small gestures as much as bold leaps.

“What do you think of me?” choreographed by @cat_cogliandro for the Ailey/Fordham Senior Solo Concert 2025

the first day we stepped out of the studio after creating this piece, i thought “this is the most beautiful, genius piece of art i’ve ever seen.” i feel so lucky to have worked with such an incredible artist who i admire so much and who captured my essence so well. thank you @rileightimmerman for guiding me and showing me that there is light at the end of the tunnel 1 year post-grad.

this piece is a testament to my resilience and strength in this program and as a dancer, as i continued to work hard through injury, mental health struggles, and trying to stay true to my identity. i have felt unseen and unvalued in the dance industry and this piece validates that the problem is not me, and i will step out of these 4 years with the confidence to always stay true to who i am. i am so proud to say that i graduated from my dream program having grown endlessly as a person and as a dancer ❤️‍🔥 by @aileymacdavid
