Unbodied
Bamboo, kinetic motors and synthetic hair
Approx. 400 cm (H), dimensions variable
2026

A four-metre bamboo forms the central body of the installation, animated by multiple kinetic devices, with strands of black hair appearing to grow from it. The bamboo moves continuously in subtle swaying motions, occasionally interrupted by sudden, larger movements. Each device is programmed with different timings, making these shifts difficult to anticipate and giving the bamboo a seemingly self-directed, organic rhythm.

The bamboo was collected from Yim Tin Tsai, an island in Hong Kong, after it was found fallen beside the Hakka house where the work was later installed. No longer a living plant, it remains as a bodily remnant. Within East Asian cultural traditions and ghost narratives, hair is often associated with spirits and ghostly presences. Appearing to grow from the lifeless bamboo, the strands of black hair evoke the spectral atmosphere of ancient ghost tales. As the bamboo continued to move throughout the exhibition period, strands of hair gradually fell from its body and accumulated on the floor.

Conceived specifically for the Hakka house, the bamboo’s four-metre height closely mirrors the architecture that contains it: the house becomes a bodily shell, with the bamboo forming another body within it. Through the convergence of bamboo, hair and mechanical movement, the work gives an organic presence to a mechanical system, blurring the boundaries between living and non-living, body and spirit, the human and non-human.

“1” is a solo exhibition featuring a mechanical sound installation, a body of moving sculptures, an interactive 3D video game, a 2D visual novel game, and mixed media works, all situated within an immersive cave-like environment.

A dimly lit chamber constructed to recall the interior of an ant nest, the exhibition explores the notion of existence within a unified body and considers techno-animism under the context of contemporary pantheism. Utilizing the archetypal ant colony as its basis, the artist proposes a paradigm wherein all sentient beings—living, mechanical, or otherwise—are constituents of a single, all-encompassing entity.

Ants operate as a superorganism, where the colony functions by instinct as a singular, self-organizing system. Each ant plays a specific role, such as foraging, defending, or caring for the young, all working in concert such that the colony may adapt, survive, and thrive as if it were one living organism.

Across varied philosophies, similar ideas have been raised vis-à-vis the universe and all that it contains, seeing all living things as part of a unified whole, be that of a divinity, cosmic harmony, or simply the natural order.

It is under this framework that Ailsa Wong asks: what if all objects, including those of technology, had souls? If we were to subscribe to techno-animism, how will we co-operate within an interconnected system?

Vein as the flow of life.

Vein traces the movement of life force through veins, roots, and unseen networks. Burning marks evoke the quiet energy that flows through all forms, while textures shift with the viewer's movement, revealing life as a living, interconnected rhythm.

Ailsa Wong is a Hong Kong artist whose practice spans painting, moving installations, interactive games, and image-making. Her work explores consciousness, belief systems, and the relationship between human and non-human forms of existence.

Her painting practice is informed by automatic drawing, subconscious imagery, and intuitive mark-making. She develops her works through an ongoing dialogue with materials, allowing images to emerge and evolve organically. Her paintings often blur the boundaries between inner and outer landscapes, reflecting a worldview in which all forms of existence are interconnected, while opening spaces for perception, emotion, and belief.

Through form, all things come into being.

Bringing together seven artists from Hong Kong, Indonesia, France, Lithuania, and Germany, FORM explores shape not as a fixed appearance, but as a process of transformation, perception, and becoming.

Across painting, ceramics, photography, installation, and textiles practices, the exhibition traces the ways form emerges through material, memory, intuition, and lived experience. Extending beyond contemporary art, invited guests contribute perspectives rooted in jewellery craft, indigenous culture, and Ikebana.

Vol 04:

(Ailsa Wong: Unbodied)
「軀」並非限制,而是一種通道,使那些無形體的存在,得以在擺動與滲透之間短暫顯現。
The ”body“ is not a limitation, but a conduit that allows unbodied existences to temporarily manifest between oscillation and permeation.
Artist Ailsa Wong constructs a dynamic system that continuously oscillates and is interconnected, using found bamboo from Yim Tin Tsai as its core. Within this small house-like shell, installations and paintings jointly generate an inner landscape. Here, matter and consciousness, the artificial and the natural, are no longer opposed, but permeate and coexist within the same system.
我們邀請你進入這具「身體」,在純粹的寧靜中,感受那些不被具體承載的存在。
We invite you to enter this ”body“ and, in pure serenity, feel those existences that are not concretely embodied.
