Aiman Mimiko ( @aim_miko ) is a Los Angeles-based Nigerian-American writer and director whose work explores ideas of acceptance and belonging in Muslim and African cultures. The Pillars Artist Fellow is currently developing his debut feature film, QUARTERS, focused on the impacts political activism can have on a family. His short film, MR. BOLD, was shortlisted for BAFTA’s 2023 Live Action Student Award. His need to reinvent what belonging truly means helped birth MR. BOLD, which retells a personal story about the time he defaced a wall of his school’s mosque in a bid to gain the respect of his older brother.

Aiman’s work draws from his formative years living in Nigeria, the United States, and Malaysia. “My work aims to recapture the themes of my parents’ stories, but told through the lens of my own experience,” says Aiman. “Taken together, I weave fantastic and dramatic stories of Africans and Muslims searching for moments of peace in worlds where they are cast only as the outsider.”

Excited to announce that "Mr. Bold" will play in the 30th Edition of the @africanfilmfest on Mon. May 29th at 8:30 PM and Wed. May 31st at 5:30 PM at @bam_brooklyn

Tickets will be available at the end of April. (Come on May 29th if you want to see me and @justkaelo Q&A it up)

I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful set of collaborators on this Nigerian film. Truly humbled by our selection.

Hi everyone! I’m Haley Saunders @dp_haley, your @theicfc host for the next two weeks!
Let’s hear it for our last talented host @nyssa_gluck! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

It’s Aries season, baby. Fire fire everywhere. Cinematography has helped me discipline and direct my fire. I’m predominantly a scripted narrative cinematographer. I use visual and aesthetic tools to strengthen the emotional impact of important stories. I’m here in this career for 2 reasons, and I’m better for it. 1, for the love of this lifelong study of light and human behavior. 2, I need this outlet to contribute to the revolution.

In the next few weeks I’ll share some of my cinematographic study and practice. As filmmakers, we are world builders. We usher change. We enable audience members to feel a strong connection with experiences and identities beyond their own. We work in a very powerful medium that–when done well–can be close to consciousness itself. Let’s use our powers for good! Let’s respect our subjects, our collaborators, and the laborers who bring our stories to life.
