Baby Aimi circa 2016- my first pole shoot

Fun fact- once upon a time this was the cover photo for the @amorousdance studio app. Every time I visited home and popped into my old studio it would startle me seeing my face when I would register for a class 😂

A carousel of clips from one of my regular weekly highlights (& a long rambling)- if you’ve ever taken a class from @agrundstrom411 then you know her class is like a big exhale. These weekly Wednesday classes have brought me so much joy and release.

At the end of class as we shared our takeaways someone brought up the idea of “being in limbo” and different pathways of our pole journeys and I’ve been sitting with the discussion. I’ve openly shared with so many friends how I’ve pivoted my pole journey over the last year- I stopped chasing the tricks and my focus has been fluidity and connection.

We are a society of “do-ers” and achievers; so many of us try to find happiness in our accomplishments. “If I can I meet this goal of xyz then I’ll be happy.” Only as we move through life the achievements become harder and longer to reach- we become unhappy because we feel like we’re not making progress. We use our success as a crutch for our happiness and self-esteem.

I think for so many this reflects their movement journey as well. It becomes the chase of checking off the next hardest trick- the instant gratification of visible growth. And when the growth slows or we see someone else progressing faster, we get frustrated and become unhappy.

But what happens when we peel back our ego? When we use movement as an opportunity to connect with ourselves? To connect with our body, our emotions, the music, and to lean into it?

Yes, we should absolutely celebrate our achievements- our bodies are incredible and capable of so many amazing things. But the greatest celebration is showing up for ourselves authentically.

I’ve loved this class because it’s paralleled so much with the direction of my pole journey- to spend more time reconnecting with myself. It’s a reminder that this is pole “dance”- it’s an art. by @aimimoves
