the surprise of a lifetime: southern charm in the west village ✨

@gradyshiflet is officially my gold standard of planning a proposal. when he inquired earlier this year, it was in kahoots with ainsley’s sister, @ckudlataspess. their idea was to surprise ainsley not only with a proposal while on a trip to new york, but to have both their parents and siblings fly in, too.

the plan? grady pops the question on franklin street during a morning walk on the way to what would be a surprise brunch. classic tribeca cobblestone. after, i’d offer ainsley to continue on with a short engagement session. towards the end, unbeknownst to her, family would begin to trickle in from different streets and corners, one at a time 🫂

this was one of the most complex yet rewarding plans i’ve ever had the pleasure of executing and photographing. timing was of the essence — only ~1.5 hours to juggle a public surprise proposal, and helping 20 people navigate a new city without crossing paths until go time. it takes a village to surprise an ainsley!

four years ago, ainsley was a junior at @universityofky when her friends convinced her to take a last-minute trip to visit @univofalabama. that same weekend, grady, a track athlete at bama, had recently gotten injured and ended up at his brother’s fraternity party instead of traveling with the team.

by complete happenstance, they ended up in a room neither planned to be in. ainsley walked over, handed grady a drink, introduced herself, and that one conversation changed everything.

cut to: nonstop texting, hours of facetime calls, and many 6-hour road trips to see one another — the pair spent their entire senior year of college long distance. and now, wedding bells are in sight 🥹

ainsley and grady, you have two of the biggest hearts and spirits i’ve ever met. the energy of this morning was infectious, full of so much soul, and of such pure intent. a day like this gives me hope for everyone to find a love so tender and genuine.

the highest form of love is consideration, and grady didn’t miss a beat in considering the moments, people, and atmosphere that would matter most to ainsley.
