My passengers that I flew this day were two delightful and adventurous women. Somehow, once again, I was lucky to have beautiful weather to fly the outer coast with them and land at this lake a second time. The names of the lakes, bays, and peaks in this area all have names that echo an era of abundance and success, as gold mining boomed in this area during the early 20th century.

Before Captain Cook sailed this area in the 1700s, and before the fur otter trade that brought Russian, Spanish, and English boats to this area, there were the Sugpiaq people. They were known as the Alutiiq, and they thrived here 1,800 years ago in a landscape far more intense than it currently is.

Shoreline carved out violently by volcanic eruptions, oceanic crust lifted by tectonic movement, glaciers that were once at least 2,000 feet deep, and strong winds make the Kenai Fjords a dramatically beautiful coastline.

This area is home to 2–5 million birds, sea lions, sea otters, gray whales, humpback whales, rorqual whales, killer whales, mountain goats, black bears, and the top-producing red salmon fisheries on the outer coast.

You could live here for a decade and still be unraveling the history and still be exploring the landscape. Alaska is the only place that has captivated my imagination, buying book after book on history, geology, and the animals that thrive here.

There is a wild here that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world, and the day that changes is the day we lose our way.

We broke our own world record yesterday! (Pending ratification). Women’s wingsuit world record 19-way! Prior to us deciding to try and beat our own world record we spent the day flying vertical formations and sequential formations. Which is a category that doesn’t exist for wingsuiting that we hope will change! Needless to say, this weekend was all time high vibes and so. much. FUN! @vserigs @squirrel.ws

This weekend I spent most of my time out of service in the Moab desert with two best friends and a film crew. Our mission was a zero emission BASE jumping adventure with @theridetozero
We woke up at camp in Onion Creek at 6:00am and rode our bikes 8.5 miles to Parriott Mesa. We made the hour and fifteen minute hike to the top of Parriott Mesa and then BASE jumped. After our jump we rode our bikes from Parriott Mesa to downtown Moab logging over 30 miles of riding our bikes.
I can’t even begin to tell you how fun it was and how easy it was. For the BASE jumping community (and really just everyone); I want to challenge you to give back even more and lower your carbon footprint by biking to your favorite exits. Not only that, but the entire process of getting to the exit points from a different perspective and the process of managing your time to do so is surprisingly fun. I promise! Trust me on this one. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

An older gentleman sat up front with me, “Wow, you’re not just a pilot, but you’re an anthropologist, geologist, and meteorologist.” He said in response to my constant and excited narration during our flight across the Cook Inlet to Katmai National Park and Lake Clark National Park.

I looked over at him, “Alaska is the only place that’s inspired me so deeply.” I watched his eyes disconnect with mine and he looked out the front windshield towards tame water and jagged mountains that seemed larger than life on a clear blue day. He gently nodded his head lost in the scenery.

The intensity of Alaska is intoxicating for me. The drama in each change of season. The drama in rapidly changing weather. How quickly you can have an entire mountain to yourself or an entire beach. A culture where people laugh loudly, speak boldly, roll their sleeves up, and put their phones down. I look at these photos/video and I’m still a little bit in disbelief about the summer I just had.

While my passengers hiked around for a little while I thought to myself, “I have time to either eat my dinner or swim…”

The water was crystal clear. Salmon swam near by, otters splashed, and the edge dropped off so fast diving in was an obvious invite.

I was 2 for 2 coming to this lake which historically at the company is not the case whatsoever. So, although my hungry belly made me consider my choices one second too long it almost felt criminal if I didn’t swim. Especially, not knowing if I would ever have the opportunity again. 🦦 by @airporthippy

Spending a summer hanging out with Katmai bears is something I would have never guessed was on my life bingo card 🐻🩵 by @airporthippy

Mayday and I are baaaaaack doing the things we love. Thank you @aus_ave @sroberts1731 @utang.psa for the amazing weekend.

My sacrifices this summer for work, personal growth, and career progression were absolutely necessary, and life changing for that matter.

I wasn’t prepared for how hard it’d be away from Mayday though. I am beyond grateful she was with a friend that I trusted wholeheartedly.

When I finally had moments for my mind to wonder it would begin to calculate the time I hope to have with her in this lifetime and the time we were missing being apart. Wagering time like tomorrow is unknown and not guaranteed.

Which was a lesson I learned a long time ago from skydiving and BASE jumping, but this chapter was different. And to be completely honest, I had days flying that were more challenging than any BASE jump or any skydive I’ve ever done. I met versions of myself that I have never met before.

So, now I’m sitting here watching her sleep while I make flash cards for a new aircraft. I’m equipped with a new vision what it means to be a pilot with dog I love with my entire soul.

September in a nutshell. On October 1st, the day after my season ended, I woke up super sick. Classic. Now that I have some down time and I’m taking care of myself I’ve been feverishly writing about my summer. Maybe I’ll share some it. Until then, enjoy some of my favorite photos from September. 🧡

Saint Augustine sits in the Cook Inlet at 4,133ft. Captain Cook named it when he sailed past it on May 26, 1778. It has a long history of being active and its last eruption was in 2006. Often you can’t see it all because it’s covered in clouds.

Bruin Bay. Honestly, that’s all I have to say. The stories from this Bay will be kept close to my heart and heard by few.

Mt. Iliamna volcano sits at 10,016ft with ten glaciers covering its slopes. The face of it is covered by the Red Glacier. It steams and vents everyday. It’s my favorite volcano 🥲

There were a lot of highlights this summer that I will remember for the rest of my life, but being able to share this dream with my best friend of 25 years is all I need in life. 🩵🧡 by @airporthippy
