Juana Trujillo (Santa Ana Pueblo) is our #AISSLobo this week! Juana is a sophomore and psychology major who wants to become a licensed massage therapist. She hopes to use her psychology to support the overall well-being of her clients. Juana chose to attend UNM because she did not want to become detached from her culture by going out of the state and she knew that UNM would allow her the opportunity to grow and become more independent while still having home be a short drive away. Here’s a bit of info to help you get to know Juana better!

🦌 She can bring home big game more often than the boys in her family
🐕 Her three dogs (Wendy, Jack, and Oreo) keep her motivated
🎥 She was in a fashion show and a short film
🍴 Her fav food is her mother’s wheat pudding
👩‍🚀 Her hero is Christina Koch

She’s involved in her community by participating in traditional dances and learning about ceremonies, and she’s a member of a pottery group with her mother and godmother where they revitalize the practice of creating traditional Santa Ana pottery. St. John’s Feast Day, Juana’s Name Day, on June 24 is her favorite tradition where she is able to be surrounded by good food & family and she is able to share the blessing and offerings she received by giving back to her people with a closing traditional throw from the roof of her home. Juana also invites you all to her house for her Name Day on June 24 and for the St. Anne’s Feast Day on July 25 at the Old Santa Ana Village. We’re honored to have an amazing student like Juana on our campus, and we look forward to everything she’ll accomplish! #UNM #NativesInHigherEd #GoLobos by @aissunm

We’re highlighting Jadyn Harrison (Diné) as our #AISSLobo! He’s a psychology major with a biology minor and his goals are to support the youth in his community as either a psychiatrist or physician. He chose this degree to not only support others, but it was a field that he was always interested in and he’s grateful to have the opportunity to pursue it in college. Here’s a few fun facts about Jadyn:

👑 He was the 2022-2023 Mr. FHS at Farmington High School
🎧 His fav spot in Abq is the vinyl record section of Antiques & Things
🎸 He plays guitar and skateboards
🍿 His go-to snacks are Welch’s Fruit Snacks, Coca-Cola, & Popcorn

His heroes are his mom, dad, grandparents, uncle, and aunties. They all raised him and helped him to be the man he is today. Jadyn shares that he’s “thankful for everything they did and do for me.” Family is very important to Jadyn and they’re one of his biggest motivators to tackle challenges, be better, and do well academically. He puts in hard work into everything he does because he knows that he has to work hard for the things he wants in life. We’re happy to have the opportunity to share a bit about Jadyn. We’ll continue rooting him on!! #UNM #NativesInHigherEd #GoLobos by @aissunm

Callie Crespin (Comanche Nation & Apache) is a first-year medical student and is this week’s #AISSLobo! She wanted a career that would allow her to make a meaningful and lasting difference in the lives of others and medicine provides her with the opportunity to combine her love of learning and science into building relationships and supporting people during the most important and vulnerable moments of their lives. Callie is passionate about serving communities in New Mexico and plans to build her career in the Land of Enchantment! Here’s some fun facts about Callie:
⛰️ She enjoys the outdoors (hiking, horse riding, snowboarding, etc.) with friends and her family & fiancé
🍫 She loves anything chocolate
🐎 She has two mules, a horse, and a donkey
✈️ She loves to travel and has visited Spain, France, Italy, and Mexico and spent a month this summer in Greece

#UNM was selected as her school of choice because of a large number of reasons. Callie always knew that she wanted to pursue a career in medicine and @unmsom was her dream school because they understand & support her passion for remaining in NM and serving the communities here while providing a world-class education. She shares that she loves the culture and sense of community at UNM and she’s grateful to have an incredible support system in her family nearby. We’re happy to be highlighting a Lobo who’s excited to start another amazing journey with the goal of bolstering NM! #NativesInHigherEd #GoLobos by @aissunm

This week’s #AISSLobo is Taressia Garcia (Fort Mojave Indian Tribe)! She’s in the Juris Doctor program and plans to use her education to serve Indigenous peoples & communities. Here’s some insight into Taressia:

💚 She collects smiskis
🔥 Hot Cheetos (Hot Fries!) are her go-to snack
⚖️ Once she graduates, she will be the first attorney from her tribe!
💧 She’s proud to be Pipa Aha Macav (People by the River) – she stands for the Colorado River and the water

Taressia decided to attend #UNM because she wanted to be at a law school where she could pursue her interest in Tribal and Indian Law while being part of a strong & supportive community. Her proudest UNM moment so far is stepping into leadership roles that supports other students and people in the local community. Growing up on her reservation was her inspiration to pursue a career where she could give back to her community and help others. She saw the importance of advocacy and the need for individuals to understand the Indigenous communities they serve. We’re proud to have Taressia as a Lobo and we’re inspired by her dedication to her community and uplifting others. Way to go, Taressia!! #NativesInHigherEd #GoLobos by @aissunm
