SCULPTURAL WORKS II — FRAGILITY & RESIDUE

What happens when materials associated with precarity are given the presence of objects conceived to endure?

In Aitor Etxeberria’s sculptural practice, cement, glass and fragments coexist without concealing their vulnerability. Broken edges, porous surfaces and embedded elements retain traces of construction, erosion and previous material lives.

Within these almost monochromatic structures, residue becomes a carrier of memory. The works inhabit a territory between ruin and construction, where imperfection reveals a continuous tension between fragility and resistance.

SCULPTURAL WORKS II — FRAGILIDAD & RESIDUO

SCULPTURAL WORKS I — MATERIAL TENSION

Weight and fragility coexist in Aitor Etxeberria’s recent sculptural works, where cement, glass and recovered materials are assembled into vertical, almost totemic forms.

The material contrasts are deliberate: rough and fractured surfaces meet smooth, translucent elements; construction encounters vulnerability. Stripped of decorative artifice, the works reveal a direct relationship with matter that recalls the material sensitivity of Arte Povera.

Rather than concealing irregularity, Etxeberria allows each surface to register it. Cement becomes a kind of skin—marked by accumulation, erosion and construction—while the objects embedded within it remain visible as fragments of another material history.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES III: TOTEMS & PRESENCES

Within Aitor Etxeberria’s photographic series, certain found objects begin to move beyond documentation. Gathered by chance yet transformed through the artist’s gaze, they acquire the presence of sculptural forms, standing in the landscape like silent totems.

Built from discarded fragments of wood, rope, plastic, and other remnants carried by the sea, these accidental assemblages embody one of the central ideas of Etxeberria’s statement: objects found on the shore gradually begin to claim a presence of their own. Removed from their original function and isolated within the frame, they become witnesses to the relationship between consumption, memory, and territory.

The beach becomes more than a setting—it becomes an active collaborator. Wind, salt, erosion, and time reshape these materials, allowing them to exist somewhere between what was abandoned and what has been rediscovered. Rather than imposing meaning, the photographs reveal what already exists, inviting us to recognise unexpected forms that emerge naturally within the landscape.

These images suggest that sculpture can also be found rather than made. Through careful observation, the ordinary acquires symbolic weight, reminding us that nature continuously transforms the traces of human activity into new material narratives.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES II: MATERIAL MEMORY

This second selection from Aitor Etxeberria’s photographic series continues his exploration of the relationship between matter, memory, and landscape. Emerging from the same line of inquiry that informs his sculptural practice, these images focus on fragments that seem to exist between disappearance and permanence.

Broken concrete, abandoned structures, and weathered remains are presented without spectacle. Isolated from their original function, they become quiet presences that speak of erosion, time, and the traces of human intervention. The landscape does not simply contain these materials; it gradually absorbs them, altering their identity and allowing them to become part of a new environment.

Rather than documenting decay, Etxeberria invites us to consider how matter carries memory. Each fragment holds the imprint of a previous use while simultaneously opening the possibility of another reading. What was once discarded acquires a renewed presence, revealing the subtle dialogue between destruction and transformation.

These photographs propose a contemplative way of looking, encouraging us to recognise value in what often remains unnoticed. In this encounter between human residue and the slow rhythms of nature, the ordinary becomes charged with history, silence, and poetic resonance.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SERIES I: FOUND PRESENCES

While photography is not the central axis of Aitor Etxeberria’s practice, this series emerges as a natural extension of concerns that have long informed his work. Developed through the observation of coastal landscapes, these images become a way of exploring themes already present in his sculptural and pictorial language: material transformation, memory, erosion, and the traces left behind by human activity.

Across beaches shaped by wind, salt, and time, discarded objects begin to claim a presence of their own. Fragments of wood, plastic, rope, metal, and anonymous debris appear suspended between disappearance and permanence. No longer functioning as waste, they become markers of a history written into the landscape itself.

What once belonged to systems of consumption reappears altered by natural processes. The sea returns these remnants transformed, partially absorbed into their surroundings, carrying the visible signs of weathering, displacement, and time. Isolated within the frame, these objects acquire an unexpected dignity, inviting us to look more carefully at what usually goes unnoticed.

Rather than documenting environmental debris, the series proposes a poetic reflection on material memory and territory. These photographs reveal a silent dialogue between human intervention and nature’s capacity to reclaim, reshape, and recontextualise what has been left behind.

In these sculptural works, Aitor Etxeberria constructs a dialogue between erosion and reflection, where matter becomes both container and threshold. The rough, patinated surfaces — marked by fractures, cavities, and traces of time — hold polished reflective forms that introduce a quiet yet striking tension between opacity and clarity.

Embedded within the mass, the reflective elements act as portals rather than focal points. They capture fragments of the surrounding space and return them altered, folding the viewer into the work itself. What appears solid becomes unstable, what seems heavy becomes perceptually fluid.

Rooted in an arte povera sensibility, these sculptures approach permanence as a fragile condition. The material feels shaped by time rather than imposed form, suggesting a slow process of transformation where presence and disappearance coexist.

This sculptural work reveals Aitor Etxeberria’s sensitivity to form as a living, breathing presence. Reduced to an essential gesture, the piece unfolds through smooth, continuous curves that evoke both containment and openness, weight and quiet vulnerability.

Here, matter is shaped with restraint. The surface absorbs light rather than reflecting it, inviting a slow and intimate encounter with volume and balance. Neither figurative nor fully abstract, the form exists in a suspended state, suggesting an inner space where perception lingers and meaning remains open.

Rooted in Etxeberria’s ongoing dialogue with fragility and permanence, the sculpture stands as a silent body, grounded yet delicate, where transformation is felt rather than declared.

In these sculptural works, Aitor Etxeberria confronts matter as both container and mirror. Rough, eroded surfaces — marked by fractures, cavities, and traces of construction — hold polished, reflective forms that introduce a quiet tension between opacity and clarity.

The contrast is deliberate: weight against light, erosion against precision. The reflective elements do not dominate the structure; instead, they appear embedded, almost protected by the material that surrounds them. They capture fragments of the environment and the viewer, folding perception back into the work itself.

Rooted in an arte povera sensibility, these sculptures explore permanence as a fragile condition. The mass feels grounded, yet unstable — as if shaped by time rather than by force. Reflection becomes a subtle act of participation, reminding us that matter is never inert, and that solidity always carries the possibility of change.

Here, sculpture is not an object to be read, but a presence to be encountered — where material, space, and gaze remain in continuous dialogue.
