Fashion has always been about challenging expectations. But some corners of internet, apparently, have other ideas.⁠
⁠
When London College of Fashion graduate @aivi_phong walked across the stage wearing a dress from her own graduate collection, she didn't expect to become the centre of an online debate. Critics called her look "inappropriate" and even claimed higher education had become "a joke".⁠

For Ai-Vi, the outfit was never about shock value. It was about graduating in work that reflects four years of studying contour design and reimagining lingerie as outerwear.⁠

We caught up with her about the backlash, her favourite hate comments, and why she'd happily dress her critics in one of her own thongs.⁠

Faces of Judgement For Vans Knu Skool By @coldarchive_agency

Style is never just personal. The second you step outside, it becomes something other people read.
A stare, a double take, a raised eyebrow, judgement happens fast. What feels normal in one place can feel completely wrong in another. The outfit stays the same, but the social rules shift around it.

That tension sits at the centre of the Vans Knu Skool. With its oversized tongue, chunky laces and exaggerated ’90s skate silhouette, it was never designed to blend in.

“Faces of Judgement” isn’t about dressing for approval. It’s about holding onto your own style, even when the room is looking back.

SAIGON HOMECOMING opening LCF Contour show 2026
SAIGON HOMECOMING explores the boundaries between lingerie and what is considered to be worn outside, as well as asking oneself what sex-appeal means to one. It expresses the cultural perspectives of sensuality between my upbringing as a Vietnamese girl raised by immigrant parents and growing up in Germany. It’s the shift between German sexiness & liberty and the pure Vietnamese elegance.

Lingerie reimagined through waste, memory and cultural duality.

Final year BA (Hons) Fashion Contour student Ai-Vi Phong presents ‘Spider Lily’, created for the LCF student-led NOIR SHOW 2025.

Born in Vietnam and raised in Germany, Ai-Vi blends Eastern and Western influences to challenge the boundaries between lingerie and outerwear, redefining womenswear and menswear through a female gaze.

Made entirely from textile waste and production offcuts sourced from her family’s manufacturing process, the work responds directly to environmental impact and circular design thinking.
