Grief has a funny way of making you realize that someone can be gone and still be everywhere.
My mom is 51 today.

This year I wanted to make her a piece of art. My mom was an incredibly talented artist. The three flowers in the center represent three of her organ recipients I’ve been fortunate enough to reach recently this year. Three people carrying a piece of her forward in this world.

I look for you everywhere. I am so grateful and blessed for my family and my life as it is now, but when I’m old and I get to look back on everything and everyone—having you as my angel will be one of the things I’ll hold closest to my heart. I get so mad at myself for getting so sad and missing you till it hurts, but I just have to remember how lucky I am to have had someone that I love so deeply with everything I am.

August is National Grief Awareness Month. If you know anyone that has lost someone close to them—maybe check in with them this month.

My favorite memory of Betsy was from when she was really little and was taking swim lessons, and there was a little boy who was so scared of going under the water. Even though betsy was so young she still could tell how scared he was. She gave him the biggest hug and started comedically dunking her head under the water to show him it wasn’t scary. That sums her up as a person to this day still. She is funny, intelligent, kind, and just everything you would want in a friend. I’m just lucky she gets to be my baby sister.
