“Self Reflection”

An installation mixed media peice.

Cyanotype using photo negatives on 100% linen curtains, with fabric paint, painted within the images. In addition to this, I also incorporated five cynanotype prints, one of them (in the center) is a written component. The remaining prints contain machine sewn white thread over it.

Written Component:

My mom says that, as a kid, I was her easiest child. She described me as so chill, self sufficient, and responsible. Simple, easygoing. She said every morning, even as a toddler, I got myself up in the morning (no alarm), got myself dressed, prepared and ate my breakfast. Then I watched TV until it was time to go to school.
My mom also said I had a strong pain tolerance. When it came to things like getting shots or going to the dentist, there were no worries. My brother, on the other hand, was the one flipping out. I used to get strep throat a lot as a kid, which eventually resulted in me getting my tonsils out when I was five. My mom said that whole week, I never asked for medicine once. I sat down, watched TV, and ate ice cream. Even though the doctors said it is a painful recovery, I didn’t complain.
For a child who was once so easygoing and so strong…. When did that change? When did I become so difficult to deal with? When did I become so anxious and fearful of everything? When did I start to complain or get upset over any minor inconveniences? When did I start suppressing my emotions? When did I start biting my tongue? What changed me?
Then I remember when the shift happened. Little by little, it came in, and I was living in survival mode instead of being content. It became much harder to let things go and not worry. People that came in, and circumstances, took “my power” away from me. Took away my peace.
Now I’m learning through my relationship with myself instead of my relationships with other people. Who really am I? To my core, who is Aja? Before people, situations, or circumstances shifted how I see myself?

Your sign to stop treating your room as just a place to sleep, and start prioritizing your space!

Consider revamping your space and filling it with things that inspire you and bring you a sense of comfort. I filled mine with lots of colors and patterns because those are things I love to incorporate within my art work and personal style. I also highlighted my own artworks, and work from artists, and people that inspire me like Henri Matisse + The Weeknd.

I shared a room my entire life and always had to compromise my space and privacy. Having my own room is really something I always wanted, and I worked really hard to be in my place and have my own independence. This is my favorite place to be and I love when I have time to enjoy it and relax in here. When it’s organized and clean it also makes me feel like I have my entire life together lol.
