Based in Nairobi, Kairos Futura brings together artists, designers, scientists and community organisers around a shared conviction: imagining what comes next is not an exercise in forecasting but a practical one, carried out where you live.

The collective began in Lamu, on the coast, in 2021, before settling in the capital. There it developed the Nairobi Space Station: artists in improvised spacesuits moving through the city’s neighbourhoods, planting trees, installing water filtration systems, working on access to water and on greening the densest parts of the city. The title is ironic: while others imagine colonies on Mars, Kairos Futura points out that Earth is already inhabited.

The same approach runs through its recent work. MtaaZillas (2025) draws the neighbourhood waste collectors, rarely visible in stories about plastic pollution, as superheroes. The Human Nest (2026) is a structure woven from local grass over a metal frame, modelled on a weaverbird’s nest, asking what shelter built from what grows nearby might look like. Neither is a proposal on paper.

As Ajax Axe, Director of Kairos Futura, puts it: “Through storytelling, objects, performance, design and experimentation, people can step inside a possible future, test it, question it and begin to shape it together.”

That principle, beginning with the landscapes, knowledge, materials and communities already at hand rather than with models designed elsewhere, has carried the collective well beyond Kenya. Its Wild Future Lab, which imagines Nairobi in 2045, received the @startseu S+T+ARTS Prize Africa in 2025, and its projects have been shown at Milan Design Week and at the United Nations headquarters.

“Imagination is not separate from creating change,” Axe told @dakartnews .”It is one of the places where change begins.”

Utopia Chair #2 is an exploration of commonly available materials around Nairobi.
I’ve continued exploring the transfiguration of objects and their meaning with this piece.
The reflector yellow is a common motif around the city because so many people work in heavy traffic. The bowl planter is made from a locally made pot and the plants are meant to be a micro-oasis. The umbrella is the umbrella commonly used by motorcyclists in Nairobi. The foot rest is a chapati plate. The wings are from recycled tire strips.
All around us every day, we live in the space between apathy and transformation.

This is Utopia Chair #1. I have always been interested in the transfiguration of ordinary or overlooked objects and places through the power of imagination. This chair I welded from the skeleton of a school chair. School experiences in Kenya often include a lot of trauma and I wanted to reimagine the chair as an experience of delight and pleasure. by @ajaxinthewild
