🚨BIG NEWS. HUGE🚨 🚨 WE’RE BUILDING AN ARTISTS’ STUDIO IN A HORSEBOX AND TAKING IT AROUND TEESSIDE. 🚨 🐴THE SIDEQUEST HORSEBOX🐴 launches outside @mimauseful for the opening weekend of the Turner Prize 2026, before we take it out across Teesside for the entire run of the Turner Prize, just like Turner did on his very own Crop-Ear, the horse that took him around the country as he created some of his finest works! 🚐 SATURDAY 26 + SUNDAY 27 SEPTEMBER
📍 MIMA, MIDDLESBROUGH
🎨 FREE + DROP IN Over the last few weeks, we’ve been talking to four of the very best Teesside artists, @claire_a_baker @hannahcampionartist @stu.art.langley and @errolaart taking their contemporary art practices and translating them with @hollienot into playful, hands-on ways for absolutely anybody to make, experiment and get stuck in with @sidequestwastaken and our team of brilliant community artists, experts at working out in public! There’ll be colour and there’ll be making and there’ll be experimenting and there’ll be things to take home!   And inside the Horsebox, we’re building a tiny photography studio where you can photograph what you’ve made and SEE YOUR ARTWORK APPEAR INSIDE MIMA! This is a travelling artists’ studio made to turn up where people already are, bringing artists, ideas, materials and a bit of SIDEQUEST joy with it. FIRST STOP: MIMA. The SIDEQUEST Horsebox is commissioned by @mimauseful and @borderlands_cpp and @mucklellp LLP, as part of Turner on Tees. The SIDEQUEST Horsebox logo was designed by @molllyarnold

🐴WHY A HORSEBOX?🐴 Yo, why did we take a horsebox and turn it into an artists’ studio? In this video @ajdbowman explains why! The SIDEQUEST Horsebox opened at @mimauseful a couple of weekends ago and will now go on tour across Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland as part of our community engagement programme for the Turner Prize! Thank you to @mimauseful and @borderlands_cpp and @mucklellp for the commission! With their support we’ll be travelling about delivering workshops by some of the *best* Tees Valley artists - @claire_a_baker @errolaart @stu.art.langley and @hannahcampionartist showing that literally anyone can be an artist! Part of Turner-on-Tees! 🦖Thank you @leonidingwall🦖 I first met @northern_scum_ AKA @leonidingwall at the @thenorthernart degree show back in June. True to form, I was still looking for the perfect 60th birthday present for @brandon.bowman.7547 months after the date and then my mind started whirring. So I commissioned Leoni to paint a picture of one the old man’s iconic moments, hugging Brussel, his pet emu that he hatched from an egg, now living at @whitehousefarmcentre. We finally got to give it to him at SIDESHOW @sidequestwastaken and he was chuffed. Leoni also had her work in the NGA at @middlesbroughartweek this past week. She is brilliant, warm and loving. Thank you. taken in Hartlepool by @ajdbowman

🐴THE SIDEQUEST HORSEBOX HAS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED🐴 After months of ideas, sketches, building, painting, planning, problem-solving, WhatsApps, spreadsheets and an unreasonable amount of thinking about a Horsebox… 🐴🎨WE BUILT A TRAVELLING ARTISTS’ STUDIO. 🐴🎨 And this weekend, we opened the doors for the very first time outside @mimauseful for the opening weekend of the Turner Prize, beginning our engagement programme! The SIDEQUEST Horsebox is now officially out in the world, taking contemporary arts practice out of galleries and into communities across Teesside. Over the next six months, we’ll be popping up in places across Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland, making, experimenting and creating with people along the way thanks for @borderlands_cpp too! Our first weekend was everything we wanted it to be: busy, playful, a little bit chaotic and FULL of people making art with workshops by @errolaart and @claire_a_baker . 💖 The SIDEQUEST Horsebox is part of Turner on Tees, commissioned by @mimauseful and @borderlands_cpp with support from @mucklellp #SIDEQUEST #SIDEQUESTHorsebox #TurnerOnTees #TurnerPrize #MIMA Pics by @ameliajread with more to follow Thanks to @kmo_1088 @gabriel.gustard @artisolutions @adzipops @molllyarnold @tyygrr.official @hollienot @emmawheetman Rachel Laycock @daniel.brobbel @stu.art.langley @cal_fw @andy.winward @feverflicker @durhamspraypaints @mishmachdraws @stephenmcgrother @dbracknell @pippa_r_art @pippa_rook_art Ryan and David @bloominart_cic @zoe__bowman @lucymclellan_ @kat.lynas @rachelteate @hannahcampionartist taken in Mima Middlesbrough Institute Of Modern Art by @ajdbowman

🩷SIDESHOW ANNOUNCEMENT🩷 Three of SIDEQUEST’s OGs are uniting to form one big queer supergroup of hosting, compèring and emceeing! The BOYGENIUS of Hartlepool without any of the music stuff. So just vibes, then. These three will be knitting the night together, introducing acts, making you all buy raffle tickets and maybe even performing a number or two. You can’t give them a spotlight and NOT expect a performance. 1️⃣@hocknu is the resident @sidequestwastaken Dungeon Master extraordinaire, the @hammeatup cult leader and the best at YES ANDing. Except a jazzy tie and a mention of Valedictorian. 2️⃣@lucymclellan_ Lucy McLellan is Leeds’s finest former @thenorthern_su Student Union President. She loved it so much she now works there! Whilst Lucy isn’t keeping things at the Northern School of Art running smoothly, you can find her at @teesvalleycreates working on The Freelancer Network @arc_stockton She was born in the same hospital as @erling 🏥shout out jimmy’s 3️⃣@ajdbowman Aaron ITS-AIREN-NOT-ARUN Bowman, is the Unc that tells everyone what to do and then changes his mind. He’s the heir to the Bowman Lordship of the Consett lands, a lineage that has previously included beekeeping, beer making and emu-rearing. Shout out to Brandon. He was once told never to grow up by @imelda_says and took the advice far too literally. taken in Tryin’ HQ by @ajdbowman
