I am exhausted after a few very busy work and travel weeks. I was debating skipping yesterday’s @cherrybombe Jubilee altogether to rest, after I was sick this week. I’m so glad I didn’t. I started to get ready, putting on a new top from my CA trip, earrings from CDMX, and my fave gold sneakers—feel-good armor for the day. I listened to and participated in some amazing conversations and walked away feeling inspired, particularly with a few food writing ideas for my novel-in-progress. Coincidentally, Jubilee kicked off with a performance from @twostrangersmusical, where I would end my day with @stephaniehelen614. I’m so glad I pushed through and showed up. What a ✨magical✨ year it’s been. #whatwesacrificeformagic came out just over a year ago, and I still hear from people who are discovering this book all the time. If you haven’t read it yet and are up for a bittersweet coming-of-age story set in MN in 1968—with witches, of course—this is your time! Think Practical Magic in Minnesota.

When I was first told that it was time to start palliative care for Ham, I had initially naively hoped that Hammie would see his 17th birthday. He was so close. But that wasn't his path, and age is just a number anyway. Swipe for more of my comfort king and my guys as babies and long teens.

Misko and I spent most of today, his first birthday without his brother, his littermate, snuggled up on the couch and he got extra salmon snacks for dinner. Every day is a little different. Misko has been spending more and more time with me, but we're still adjusting to our new day-to-day. I miss Ham every day, and I'm sure Misko does, too. I'm grateful to get a little more time with Misko.

If you're following my Substack, you'll know that I have not been shopping at Amazon myself for the since Bezos and other tech billionaires were front row at the 2025 inauguration. I am deeply uncomfortable with to comingling of corporate and tech interests with our government that is giving rise to the new technocratic oligarchy. Butttt I am also a practical book-lover and I support everyone making the choices that make the most sense for them, which includes buying ebooks in your place of choice. I am also against creating unnecessary tech waste, so instead of getting a new device, I think it makes sense to keep reading on whatever device you already have. For me, that means I prioritize reading Netgalley e-galleys and Libby ebooks on my old Kindle.

I wrote a long-ass obituary for my brave, sweet boy on Substack. I said goodbye to Hammie on Tuesday, August 11th. Words will never be able to fully capture what he meant to me, the impact that he had on my life for the last nearly 17 years. But I had to try: You did such a good job, baby. I've been lucky to attend a few special events in NYC this summer. The latest this week was for a group of small business owners brought together by @honeybook, the platform that I've used for 3+ years to run our client management software from proposals to invoices and contracts for @thefutureofagency.

Now, I am not a natural extrovert. Small talk is both exhausting and anxiety-inducing for me, especially with new people. I worry: am I boring? Is this relevant to this person? Am I talking too much? Am I getting too personal? Am I getting "what I'm supposed to" out of this? I get in my head pretty quickly, and sometimes talk myself out of attending events like these. I'm so glad I didn't skip out!

This week, I connected with other small business owners on HoneyBook who, despite our businesses being very different from one another's, have experienced the same struggles, from staffing and cash flow, to client management and quality control. @revelrouge guided us in conversations that got pretty vulnerable at times. At the inaugural HerPOWERHOUSE dinner by @sheknowsherbusiness in June, we connected over shared values—and what we won't compromise in our businesses. At the annual Bookmarked Forum by our pals at @givingtons last week, it was so validating to chat about the challenges and landscape shifts with our peers in the publishing industry, many of whom are seeing the same things we are.

Another theme in these rooms has been corporate burnout. So, so many of us went through burnout, uncertainty, mergers and acquisitions and/or layoffs in corporate roles, and now, thankfully, are reclaiming joy and agency and paving new paths. August also brings the 4-year anniversary of when I quit my last corporate job. I think of it every year when I'm at Coney Island with my closest friends, who shepherded me through that decision in 2022 while we drank frozé on the boardwalk. It's not always easy to see how far you've come while you're in the middle of it, but this is one of those moments when I can look back and see how much has changed, how much healing has happened, since that summer.
