Im excited to announce my debut middle grade novel has sold to Heartdrum/Harper Collins!

This story has been close to my heart for a long time and Im grateful it is going to get its time to shine. Its about learning to love a place while also being critical of it. Its about widening the lens of history so that we aren't seeing a single narrative define Native and Oklahoma history.

Im also happy to see it in the hands of people who understood my vision! @rosemary.brosnan and @cynthialeitichsmith are giving it a perfect home at Heartdrum. Something wonderful about this announcement is that I happened to be with Rosemary on the day it was announced! How cool is that? Super grateful to share the moment with my fellow Native writers at the @weneeddiversebooks Native Writing Intensive as well. A win for one of us is a win for all of us. <3

And an always thanks to @johnmcusick and @hmteachout for being wonderful agents. ❤️

Intro post! Osiyo (that means hello in Cherokee). I'm a kidslit author who writes whatever age group I am feeling like at the moment. Currently I am focusing on centering Native characters in contemporary settings, but I always have fantasy ideas brewing in the background of my imagination.

🔸️ My first published work will be as a contributor to DAVY JUNES LEGENDARY FRY BREAD DRIVE IN, a YA anthology featuring all Native authors out from Heartdrum, an imprint of HarperCollins, in 2025. My story is a fake dating romance that I can't wait to share.
🔸️ I am an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation and am the fifth generation to grow up on our Indian Allotment land in rural Sequoyah County, Oklahoma.
🔸️ I read all the time, whether its fanfiction or original fiction, I love angsty stories that make me feel all the feels. Romance is a must.
🔸️ I worked as a Disney Cast Member for seven years before I got laid off. Making magic has always been a core part of my career and I consider it an awesome thing to pivot from that career to being a sahm who gets to write her own magical stories.
🔸️I work as a Native Voices reporter at Cynsations, Cynthia Leitich Smith's kidslit news site.
🔸️ I love talking about what Ive been reading.

Never Whistle at Night Part II is available now!

My short story Civilized is set in 1920s Oklahoma, where civilized was more a grading system for Indian Nations than a compliment. Charley's blue eyes have always kept him safe, until women he knows start turning up dead, and no one in town wants to ask why he's always nearby.

Quinney Institute: “This delightful and engaging collection of stories is cohesive and brilliantly connected around the premise of the existence of Sandy June’s Legendary Frybread Drive-In, a magical space to learn, heal, grow, and be in community: ‘established by grandparents of various tribal Nations to offer hope, humor, and healing to young heroes of Turtle Island’ (Foreword.) The short stories and poems in this collection celebrate Indigenous culture and weave together Intertribal stories from many places and through many voices and perspectives centered around belonging; it is a joy to read for all audiences. The authors address diverse contemporary issues facing modern Indigenous youth, friends, and families, providing new perspectives and insight into topics such as intergenerational connection, love, identity, loss, and reconciliation. We believe the collection thoroughly embodies the spirit of the Quinney award by teaching, through narrative, about Native identity and culture, voice, strength, community, and connection.”

ABOUT THE AWARD

“This award is administered by the Association for the Study of American Indian Literatures (ASAIL) and sponsored by the Electa Quinney Institute for American Indian Education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee…seeks to highlight the work of story creators who continue the tradition of teaching through narratives often crossing the boundaries of genres, formats, and disciplines. To celebrate the dissemination of stories into the many spaces in which they can be shared, all published stories qualify including online, small press, and fine arts printing venues. This award is open to anyone with a published creative book from the previous calendar year. Previous Electa Quinney Award winners are not eligible for the award. However, previous award winners can be considered for other ASAIL award categories.” taken in Denton, Texas by @ajeversole

From People: Get a jumpstart on spooky season with BACK FOR BLOOD: NEVER WHISTLE AT NIGHT PART II, an Indigenous horror anthology with stories by the likes of Jessica Doe, P.C. Verrone, Jim Terry, Jessica Johns, A.J. Eversole, Sonia Marie Barry, Stephen Graham Jones, Alicia Elliott, Mat RudeWalker and others!

“It’s [LOOKING FOR SMOKE by KA Cobell (Heartdrum)] a whodunit used to face the real pain of the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women crisis head-on. The narrative holds you inside a community’s generational grief until its gut-punch of a finale that’ll have you staring at your ceiling at 3 a.m. wondering if you actually know your neighbors.” —Shane Hawk, from People, “Nine Terrifying Native American and Indigenous Books to Welcome Spooky Season” taken in Denton, Texas by @ajeversole

Pre-order GABRIEL’S WINTER COUNT by Andrea M. Page and Alfreda Beartrack Algeo (Charlesbridge, 2026)!

ABOUT

We are never alone in our tiyospaye.

Gabriel’s parents are leaving to serve, and he will stay with his grandmother, his unci. When Gabriel forgets to give his parents a parting gift, an important tradition in their Lakota family, he is bereft.

But then he learns about winter counts from Unci, and as they wait out the long months for Mama and Daddy to return, he becomes the keeper of the winter count in their family.

Follow @abalgeo @charlesbridgepublishing

Andrea M. Page was an enrolled citizen of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe in North and South Dakota. Andrea belonged to a large family, lived in upstate New York all her life, and was fortunate to travel often and experience different cultures. She wrote about untold stories and people who inspire, and she hoped that her work sparks commitment in others to make the world a better place. She was the author of Who Was Wilma Mankiller? and Sioux Code Talkers of World War II. She sadly didn’t live to see the publication of Gabriel’s Winter Count, but she reviewed the final printer proofs. Andrea’s memory is a blessing to all who knew her.

Alfreda Beartrack Algeo is a proud enrolled member of the Kul Wicasa Tribe of the Oceti Sakowin Nation (Sioux) in South Dakota and is dedicated to her family and community. Her work is showcased in numerous private collections, museums, and galleries. Alfreda has authored and illustrated several children’s books, including The Day the Earth Rose Up, selected by the Wyoming Humanities Council to represent the state at the Library of Congress in 2023; Father Eagle and the Hunter; Halhata na Thathanka / Magpie and Buffalo; Bear Heart and the Evergreen Tree; and The Cottonwood Sings. Alfreda lives in Palisade, Colorado, where she makes art and manages her small fruit farm. taken in Denton, Texas by @ajeversole
