I don’t write often and when I do it’s something I reserve for myself. However one night (when I really should’ve been sleeping…) I got an impulse to write this same piece. This poem then became the start to a whole body of work exploring the state of being “inbetween”. And that led to connecting with many amazing people ! 2 Vases made with natural clay from Choiseul St Lucia 🇱🇨📍I was researching Choiseul (a place known for handmade crafts like ceramics, baskets and canoes) so when my Nan visited last summer, I asked her to bring me back some clay. It then sat in my studio for a year while my nan kept reminding me she didn’t carry that heavy clay for nothing 😭At the same time I was reading Saidiya Hartman and Christina Sharpe and thinking about water as a site of healing, memory and wake work and so when it came to finally using this clay making a vessel of some sort felt right. The process changed along the way but actually handling the clay felt really healing and grounding - and it became a really special process to make. I didn’t have the privilege to do the same for Barbados but I still wanted to represent that side of my heritage 💓🌟🇱🇨🇧🇧 #vases #wakework #stlucia #caribbeanart #clayart by @ajk_artt

I spent months creating a body of work exploring what it means to grow up between cultures and how you find a sense of home when you’re not fully rooted in one place.Then this past summer, I unexpectedly got stuck in St Lucia for six weeks - both my grandmothers homelands. Her practice explores identity through both micro and macro perspectives, focusing on building representation for marginalised communities and creating spaces where subjects are seen as valued and beautiful. “Home is where the heART is” directed by me ⭐️🌺 (2 mins out of a 12min film) So … I made my first film !!! Was so healing to make. This film explores the concept of home through displaced identities. My home personally is my community and honestly without just that, I wouldn’t have been able to bring this vision to life 🫶🏾 Thank you to all my family and friends for being vulnerable enough to share their experiences (we sat and talked for hours, that so much footage wasn’t included!), my boyfriend for putting up with me and being the perfect DOP whilst I was bossy and dragged him here, there and everywhere, and to my cousin, who helped me make the perfect music for the vibe ! ⭐️Link in bio for the whole thing ! #shortfilm #poetry #homeiswheretheheartis #degreeshow #goldsmithsdegreeshow #womeninfilm #stlucia by @ajk_artt

“Lost and found in bloom “ 🦋🌷💐3/10 Oil on canvas (my first stretched canvas🤭) Slide 2 shows how I left this painting for months , I knew I wanted to communicate that when you’re in a rut , feeling at your lowest , there’s still something beautiful growing - a transformation, a lesson , a strengthening. But it still felt flat and untrue to me . Joy Unscripted 2/10Oil on canvas | 39.8 x 29.9 inThis is my beautiful grandmother - my grounding , my inspiration and my link back to “home”. I always say growing up I was inspired by the art in her home . I would sit in awe and now in retrospect that may have been one of the biggest sparks for a yearn to create myself.
