POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Ran up to the Delaware Art Museum, for the 4th Annual Hip-Hop Summit. There I found some familiar faces and friends. It was great to take in the ART, listen to the legends share their stories (Cornbread and Chuck D), and watch the reactions and interactions between artist and fan. Thanks to @eglobal , I got swept into the green room. It was good to see him and Chuck. Looking forward to building some cool new connections with these amazing people. Shoutout to @chuckcreekmur for hosting the ‘fireside chat’. You did a great job! Good to meet @nottimcarr @champtown7 @brownkn1 @deldot @prismbaltimore in person! In some cases we’ve been friends for years! Great day! by @ajkatzart

It happened! I got the ‘BOX! - LL Cool J - Portrait Box’, in front of LL Cool J. There was a book signing for the @smart_alec_ @vikkitobak ‘The Streets Win’ book. It was at @mahoganybooks, at National Harbor. They were so organized and prepared. The event went off smoothly.

We were able to get our books signed, and get a photo taken, with LL. I took a chance and brought the box, hoping that he’d sign it if he saw it. That’s pretty much how it went down…

I got up there, and LL said “Woah! What’s this?” I showed him the ‘I’m Bad’ lyrics on the cover, and opened the box, to reveal the portrait. He said “I’ve seen this! I’ve seen this! On-line, I think.” “Yes”, I said. He signed the cover and then we turned to get our photo captured. He said “Take another.”, and he looked at me and said “Congratulations.” I guess he knew this was a mission for me. I said “Thank you. You made it happen.” It was a quick meeting, but such a great connection. Wow! Thank you, @llcoolj - This was really special for me. Gratitude. - Andy

I finally got to meet Lou Brock. For a few years I’ve had this idea - to blur the lines between Hip-Hop, sports, and Art. One of my favorite songs is Check the Rhime (sic) by A Tribe Called Quest. The plan, half of which was accomplished today, is to get Lou Brock to write ATCQ’s lyrics on my painting. The other half of the rhyme will be penned by Q-Tip. I wasn’t sure if Lou would go for it. He was more than happy to write it on there. Now where can I find Tip? “If knowledge is the key, then just show me the lock/I got the scrawny legs but I move just like Lou Brock”

Later on, I met Q-Tip at the Kennedy Center. He finished up the piece, with ‘Got Da Scrawny Legs’

Nine years ago, I had the good fortune of having my artwork included in @mrchuckd ‘s ‘This Day in Rap and Hip-Hop History’ - Ever since, it’s been gratifying to find the book in the wild - Harvard University Bookstore, National Hip-Hop Museum, Oakland Museum of California, to name a few. Four of my pieces were included - a Q-Tip portrait, Big Daddy Kane, EPMD, and LL Cool J watercolors, and my name in the credits. This remains a big accomplishment for me, and I love that I get these visual reminders that pop up on social media (see, it’s not all bad).

This is the first ‘portrait box’ that I made. Now, I have about 25 of them. These photos were taken in 2021, and the National Hip-Hop Museum Induction event, and at the moment Rakim took a few seconds to tag the outside of the piece.

Here’s what I wrote the next day:
There are so many stories and moments from last night - The Hip-Hop Museum DC Induction Ceremony - Kid Capri, Kool Moe Dee, Nice & Smooth, Pete Rock, and Rakim. This, though, may be my favorite photo. Rakim ‘finished’ the first portrait box, by tagging the lid. To get this piece in front of him, and to have him really look, and take it in - the feeling is indescribable. He fiddled with the knobs, and asked some questions about it. Mostly he just kept saying “This is crazy! This is crazy!” I agree, but I’m not sure we were talking about the same thing. Unbelievable.

PS- Yes, that is Kool Moe Dee in the background.

Thanks to @malcolmriddle for the 📸
