There was a great panel yesterday hosted by Treeo VC, Mine Dedekoca and Inspiring Female Founders by Oxford Saïd Entrepreneurship Centre, Pinar Ozcan as part of London Tech Week.One thing that came up again and again was that funding is not only about money. The people around the table matter too. The right investor can open doors, make introductions and create opportunities long after the investment is made.As we always tell our members, get out there, attend events, ask questions and build relationships beyond your immediate circle. You never know which conversation might lead to your next customer, partner, mentor or investor.Thank you to all the speakers and everyone we met.And Amanda Slavin, Senam Payandeh, Duygu Iplikci Ergin, Duygu Kutluoglu, Kathy Harvey and Amber Perng, we found ourselves nodding along more than once. In the late 1960s, the U.S. Army made a distinction between the skills necessary for machinery operations and those used in service of people management. “Hard skills” were the competencies that involved working with hardware—operating tanks, repairing radios. “Soft skills,” on the other hand, were the ones that involved working with people, such as inspecting troops, supervising office personnel, and other social matters. It wasn’t that the army was making an evaluation between the two skill sets, per se, but rather delineating what mastery was required for each.However, somewhere between then and now, this delineation became a hierarchy, where the half of the work that didn’t use machinery somehow lost half of its importance. Quiet as kept, this might very well be one of the most consequential misnomers of modern work because the hardest skills in leadership are the ones we’ve spent fifty years calling soft. We had @drbeckyatgoodinside on the latest episode of the FROM THE CULTURE podcast and she KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLED it!Dr. Becky is a clinical psychologist and the founder of Good Inside, one of the largest parenting platforms in the world. Her work in parenting provides a useful proxy for the application of “soft skills” in management. As she reports, Good Inside members who join the community to manage their three-year-old’s tantrums, for instance, often realize months later that these same skills helped them become better managers in their work. How do I land my dream job? What should I do at the company where I’ve been recently hired to get where I really want to be? How do I go from what I have to do to what I want to do? My email inbox is flooded with inquiries from students entering the workforce post-graduation, looking for career advice, struggling with the same thing tenured professionals battle day in and day out: How do we square the incongruence between our duty (the thing we have to do to survive, pay our bills, and keep the lights on) and our conviction (the thing we feel called to do it)—especially in a job market like this? The job, of course, is our duty. The gift is our conviction. For most of us, the two seem as far apart as east and west, and never the two shall twain. For only a few lucky ones, their job and their gifts co-exist, at least, that’s what we’ve told ourselves. But what if that’s not the case at all? What if we could have our cake and eat it, too?
