Keeping family restaurants alive in Ottawa is my mission! - Have you tried Cadena Restaurant on Richmond Road?🤯 @cadenarestaurant

I went looking for a rooftop bar and found one of Ottawa’s hidden gems by accident.

My partner and I walked into Cadena by mistake. Instead of just telling us we were in the wrong place, the staff welcomed us kindly and pointed us in the right direction. I even mentioned we’d be back.

A few weeks later, we kept that promise.

Tuesday movie nights have become our tradition, so We made a special trip back to try their tapas before the theater.

Parking was easy, and the moment we walked in, the place felt spotless. Not just the tables, but windows, decor, washrooms, everything.

The atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

The menu had more than I expected, hearty dishes like paella, lamb, and snow crab, alongside the tapas.

We tried the Madrid mule, a fun twist on the Moscow mule. and beef and cheese empanadas with a warm tomato sauce.

The flavors felt authentic and fresh.

I even got to meet the owner, Sandra, and share that I work with restaurants.

But what stuck with me wasn’t business.

It was her passion.

She shared the family story behind Cadena, the importance of authentic recipes and fresh ingredients, and creating a place where guests feel like family.

At the end, Sandra brought us fresh watermelon, on the house.

Such a simple gesture, but it captured the spirit of the night.

It wasn’t about the watermelon. It was about making people feel welcome.

And that’s why independent restaurants matter.

They bring the owner’s heart into every guest experience.

They’re more than places to eat.

They’re gathering spots shaped by family, dream, and local love.

I can’t wait to go back for the Paella and snow crab.

And you know, funny enough,
the rooftop spot we originally planned to visit, well, it became an afterthought.

Sometimes getting a little lost is how you find the places worth returning to.

Thank you for all your support since 2020, I have been self producing quality music!
