Arts at UHCW, Captured Through the Lens: Dance 💛

With a huge thank you to the brilliant @oojamaflick , we’re delighted to share a little glimpse of the special moments that happen behind our ward doors, and the difference our arts programme makes to patients and their families. Funded by @uhcwcharity

First up, we’re celebrating the wonderful @akademidance , who bring the beauty and joy of South Asian dance right into our hospital.

There’s something truly special about these visits. Music and movement captivates, inspires and brings smiles to faces, creating moments of calm and connection in what can often be worrying or stressful times. For a little while, the hospital fades into the background, and there’s space to pause, enjoy something beautiful and simply be in the moment.

We feel so lucky to welcome these talented dancers into our hospital and to see the joy they bring to our patients, families and staff. ❤️ by @akademidance

The research is in and it confirms what we’ve seen first-hand since 2018. Dance has the power to transform learning, especially in SEND schools.
Our Reach Out and Reveal (ROaR) programme places highly skilled dance practitioners in residence at SEND schools, building a body of practice rooted in care, creativity and rigorous research.
Last month at our ROaR conference, we were proud to launch:
- A three-year longitudinal research report on the impact of South Asian dance in SEND education
- A resource pack for teachers, parents and carers for use in everyday learning and home life
- Case studies developed in collaboration with researchers, artists, educators and school leadership
Swipe through — then follow the link in our bio to read the report, explore the resources and dig into the findings.

Look what they made! 😍

These incredible plastic craftworks were created by primary school pupils as part of Maitri 3.0 where Akademi’s award-winning production Plastic Drastic Fantastic comes into the classroom through a 12-week artist-led programme of South Asian dance, craft and environmental storytelling.

Working with artist @valerio_dj_olive , pupils transformed recycled and school-sourced materials into something so beautiful! Alongside them, dance artists @manuela.benini.5 and @jainamodasia1 have been leading the movement and creative exploration that runs through the whole programme.

Science, art, dance, climate, creativity coming together in one programme; this is cross-curricular learning at its best.

Plastic Drastic Fantastic stepped into four London primary schools this September where around 800 pupils discovered both the benefits of plastics and the environmental impact of plastics through South Asian dance.

This marks the beginning of their journey with Maitri Meets Plastics, where they’ll work alongside artists @jainamodasia1 and @manuela_benini to explore their relationship with plastics through movement, creativity and conversation, culminating in a performance of their own.

Plastic Drastic Fantastic will also be heading out on a UK tour this October.
