This painting of Asante Prince Kwasi Boachi was painted by Christian Carl Vogel von Vogelstein 1849.

Volgelstein was a court painter and painted many distinguished people during that period.

Kwasi eventually left Germany and lived out his days in Indonesia - working as an engineer and later establishing a coffee plantation.

Listen to his story and Kwame's on our podcast. Link in stories and bio.

A huge thank you goes to @anton_wilhelm_amo_erbschaft and @birkholzholger @albertinum.skd for giving us so much of your time and the chance for us to learn more about the histories that link Ghana and Europe. by @akadimag

'White Spaces' is Elvin's second novel that explores Black masculinity through the compelling voice of British-Ghanaian music journalist Teddy.

This is a story about four friends: Teddy, Birch, Cain and Nathan, that challenges the often binary views of what it means to be Black and male.

‘White Spaces’ explores themes around sexuality, mental health, and interrogates friendships and family relationships. And if you've read Elvin's first book: 'Small Joys', you'll notice a familiar character that appears.

I found this book so engaging I read it in four days and fell in love with Birch.

If you follow our Substack, or audio podcast 'Connecting Communities', check out the full episode on 4 October.

The start to Black History Month UK would not be complete without remembering the people behind the important month.

In this clip from a longer two-part interview I did with Elder Akyaaba Addai-Sebo in 2022, he explains why the words of a six-year-old boy galvanised him into creating a space for us to reflect on our identities, histories and ensure that knowledge is passed from one generation to another.

Black History Month was established almost 40 years ago in 1987 in the UK today.

Bar culture in Ghana received a boost this month with two Accra-based bars becoming the first in West Africa to feature on a prestigious list of the world’s top 100 bars.

Front/Back Accra, a private members club on First Osu Lane ranked at no.80, while La Borracha, a restaurant promoting ‘all things’ tequila and Mexican cuisine on 11 Dade Street, ranked at no.87.

Both establishments gained the recognition from 50 Best Bar - widely regarded as a benchmark of excellence in the global drinks industry - which, for the last decade, has extended its ranking to cover the top no.51 to no.100 best bars.

'A Woman in her Prime' by the Asare Konadu was published in 1967 and yet many of the themes (motherhood v childlessness, religion and spirituality, and the role of culture and tradition) explored in this book are still very relevant today.

Kwame shares his overview in English and Twi. We share a snapshot from his review here. Full link in stories.

A Woman in her Prime is a novel I regret not reading sooner. Its attraction not only lies in the vivid depiction of life in a Ghanaian village, but for those of us who did not get the opportunity to experience life in the village, we get a flavour of how life in the village used to be in this novel. by @akadimag

We are reading a Ghanaian classic today (26 September) in the AKADi Magazine Book Club.

Pokuwaa makes that all-important rite of passage from adolescence to adulthood.

She is a successful farmer who lives in the small Ghanaian village Brenhoma.

However, her early adult life is marred by childlessness in a society that places a great premium on children and motherhood as the ultimate mark of womanhood.

Does true happiness elude Pokuwaa? Join us as we explore the themes in this book.
