‘The Fall’
Oil on linen

A painting I finished a couple weeks ago, and so enjoyed composing and painting.

I hope more and more, in my still lifes as well as upcoming portraits and figure paintings, to give light to the truth of a subject materially, and through it, give form to an emotional or spiritual realism that lies brilliantly underneath.

Typically, ancient words like ‘blessed’ have come to have a generic or vague meaning — something said after a sneeze, or for a sense of general well being. But the poetry of these thoughts comes in their specificity, and how they rhyme with other concepts.

Biblically, to be ‘blessed’ is to inherite the Divine life-giving ability, emphasized in verses at the beginning of both Old and New Testament, in Genesis and Matthew.

Personally, one of the highest prayers of an artist is to ‘bless the work of your hands’, not meaning that in general the work goes well, but specifically that your hands have the ability to, somehow, imbue it with a living presence.

There’s a sunset I’ve seen so many times. A setting sun that takes with it warmth and light.

A question we often ask is, ‘If we knew our child would get very sick, would we still choose to create life?’ This is the immortal question of the Sick Child, of the Pieta.

But to inverse this, if you knew you were going to get very sick when your children were most vulnerable, would you still choose to have them?’

These are my father’s hands. His ring is now loose on his finger, but the strength guiding them has not faded.

To paint a moment as if it was a memory sews it into the context of your life. It helps to value it not as precious, but among the most precious, not as dark, but as blindingly dark. Often the most memorable moments are both.

Some pages from my sketchbook on a series of Rembrandt copies

Drawing was my first love in art by far, but I grew quite afraid and left it for a while. These little sketches are very slowly bringing a little life back.
