Many of my newer friends and followers may not know this, but a huge part of who I am today began with a decision I made when I was only 11 or 12 years old.

I filled out my application to Milton Hershey School entirely by myself. I had no idea what I was doing. I just knew my situation wasn’t working, and something inside me believed I could change it.

I think about that a lot now. It’s still crazy to imagine having that level of gall at such a young age. To look at the life you were given and decide, before you even fully understood the world, that you were going to create something different for yourself.

On September 24, 2012, I left my five siblings, everything familiar, and the only life I had ever known to attend a boarding school hours away in the middle of nowhere, Hershey, Pennsylvania.

I’ll spare the details of my upbringing, but just know I experienced my fair share. Even then, there was a force inside me saying, “If I don’t like something, I’m going to change it.” I’ll do it scared. I’ll do it alone. I’ll do it however I have to.

MHS wasn’t easy, but it changed the trajectory of my life. It’s where I learned to cook, developed my insane work ethic, formed lifelong friendships, and found the absolute best parents I could have asked for. Four years later, I graduated with more than $80,000 in scholarships and a future that once felt impossible.

Returning for my 10-year reunion wasn’t just about looking back. It was about honoring the little boy who was brave enough to bet on himself before he had any proof that it would work.

So, thank you to that crazy little boy from Newark, New Jersey, who dared to leave, dared to dream, and decided to write his own destiny.
