【KANARTA is now available worldwide with subtitles (en, es, pt, fr)】 I’m happy to announce that KANARTA: ALIVE IN DREAMS (2020), my first feature-length film based on my fieldwork with the Shuar people in Ecuadorian Amazonia, has been released worldwide on Vimeo OTT, with subtitles in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French. https://toquestudio.vhx.tv/products/kanarta-alive-in-dreams Since its completion, this film has been screened in various international film festivals, being awarded more than ten prizes, which led to its commercial release in Japan in 2021. Screened in more than 30 independent theatres all over the country, it received critical acclaims and was covered by important medias. In 2022, it was granted Excellence in Cultural Documentary by Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, and added to streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video (only available with Japanese subtitles). In 2024, it was theatrically released in Ecuador and Mexico, stimulating vibrant discussions from different contexts. While propositions of screening anywhere in the world are wholeheartedly welcome, it is now time to release this film to the international audience. I hope to deliver this film to anyone who needs to know this story. I know that nothing similar exists in this world, after years of research. I want to share with people all over the world, the fact that in the era of ecological crisis and warfares, there still exist seeds of hope. This film is a humble document of witnessing them. Considering all the atrocities in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan and many more places, caring about the ecology and indigenous knowledges oddly look like a thing in the past. However, I’m sure that in 10, 20, or 30 years, there will be a moment where we need to come back to this ecological realm, because everything is interconnected after all. I’ll never stop my journey with this film. I would be very grateful if you could share this film with your family, friends and professional groups, so that those who need it would have a chance to discover it. Sebastian is not only a respected healer, but also a medicinal botanist who experiments with unknown plants he encounters in the forest. His unique practice seeks to cultivate new knowledge, reconnecting him with his ancestors. Pastora is one of the rare female leaders in Amazonia, who struggles to negotiate with local authorities for her community. With powerful plants such as ayahuasca, they revive and energise their perceptions of the future. These plants allow them to acquire power and a faith to cope with the obstacles they now face, given that their lives have been irreversibly affected by the modern state system. あけましておめでとうございます。2025年の今年もよろしくお願いします。 今年は映画『La Vie Cinématique 映画的人生』と民族誌的ノンフィクション『リキッド・アマゾニア』を完成させるために力を注ぎつつ、現在も滞在しているブラジルでの研修を踏まえて次の中長期的展開を模索していきます。 先の見えない霧の中を進んでいるような感覚になるときもありますが、それを諦めずに突き抜けるからこそ大きな何かに到達できると信じて。 写真は去年訪れたペルーの遺跡、オジャンタイタンボ。ペルーの遺跡群は何度見ても理解が追いつかない。この世のものとは思えない。この感覚を大事にしたい。 今年も皆さんにとって実りある年になることを願っています。 Happy New Year and best wishes for the year 2025. This year, I will focus my efforts on completing the film La Vie Cinématique and the ethnographic non-fiction Liquid Amazonia, while also exploring my next developments based on my artistic training in Brazil, where I am still staying. Sometimes I feel as if I am moving through a fog with no clear end, but I believe that I can reach something truly remarkable by going through it without giving up. The photo shows Ollantaytambo, an archaeological site in Peru that we visited last year. No matter how many times I see the Peruvian archaeological sites, I can't fully grasp them. New film! I completed a short documentary film “Soil of Mirror” in co-direction with artist @studioelmovermijs . The project started in 2021 while Elmo’s installation Mirror of Soil, a sound mirror that gathers and reflects surrounding sound, was exhibited as part of Ichihara Art Mix 2020+. Collaborating with three people from different backgrounds who have personal connections to the area referred to as “satoyama”, a distinctive form of co-existence with nature in rural Japan, the film seeks to capture creative ways of relating to the environment in times of drastic societal/ecological change. Synopsis: The film captures three Japanese people from different backgrounds who are experiencing the same artwork, Mirror of Soil. This work is a sound mirror in a lifted platform of local clay which was realized by artist Elmo Vermijs (NL) for the Ichihara Art Mix 2020+ in Chiba, Japan. Testuhide is a Buddhist monk who leads Eishoji temple near the artwork. Yuko, a volunteer who helped build the artwork with her hands, shovel, and locally sourced clay, took early retirement as a factory worker and now collaborates with conservation projects. Toshihiko, a renowned ecologist studies the decreasing biodiversity in the Satoyama. Juxtaposing their personal stories, Soil of Mirror weaves a distinct fabric of representations of contemporary Japan, in which rural Satoyama communities characterized by the particular way of coexistence with the surrounding natural environment, are on the verge of disappearance.
