Someone pinch me - I’ve got a permanent installation in London! ❤️

Very happy to share my latest project « The Unwilding » now unfolds across the railway arches at the Timber Square just 5 minutes away from the Tate Modern. Commissioned and delivered by @hivecurates in partnership with @landsecgroup

Comprised of timber panels, the work reflects timber’s lasting presence in the history of the site, from its origins as an 18th-century timber yard to the contemporary use of cross-laminated timber within the Timber Square development today. Installation is open to visit at Timber Square, 25 Lavington St, SE1 0NZ

POoR Collective collaborated with Wiggle Wonderland to create the ‘Unheard Voices in the City’ pavilion.

This vibrant open-air pavilion was designed to spotlight the experiences of local night-shift workers.

I never expected to work with light on this project, but it became one of the key features of the “The Unwilding” after multiple iterations and a lengthy design process.
At night, the installation fully transforms - almost dancing with its own shadow, cast against the new Timber Square building.
Looking forward to the longer nights of Autumn. No light without darkness 🍁🍂

Featuring Akmaral Khassen (@akmasya), the artist behind The Unwilding ✨

With a background in architecture, Akmaral's practice explores relationships between bodies and everyday structures, using artworks and installations to examine tensions between softness, rigidity, and surrounding space.

Her new permanent commission at Timber Square, The Unwilding, stretches across four railway arches through a series of interconnected figurative and botanical forms. Featuring pine and mahogany leaf motifs, the work references the site’s historical connection to the former timber yard while responding to the architectural language of the surrounding development.

Comprised of timber panels, the installation reflects timber’s lasting presence within the history of the site, from its origins as an 18th-century timber yard to the contemporary use of cross-laminated timber within the Timber Square development today.

Through its modular structure, interconnected forms and architectural scale, The Unwilding speaks to cycles of growth, regeneration and transformation embedded within the identity of Timber Square.

Akmaral said: “One of the most special things about the artwork is how it transforms from day to night. It creates a completely different visual experience depending on the time of day, from the changing reflections across the surrounding architecture to the way the work begins to glow after dark. Working with Hive Curates felt a lot like a mentorship process, where Chantelle and Mark really helped me navigate the realisation of my ideas and think through how the work would exist within the space. Their support throughout the commission was invaluable, especially in translating the conceptual aspects of the project into a permanent public artwork and I’m also very grateful to Landsec for supporting an ambitious public art project at this scale.”

The Unwilding, a new permanent commission by Akmaral Khassen (@akmasya), now stretches across Timber Square 🌼 🪾

Spanning four railway arches, the interconnected artwork explores the relationship between people, material and landscape through a series of figurative shapes intertwined with natural forms. The work features pine and mahogany leaf motifs that reference the site’s historical connection to the timber yard.

Comprised of timber panels, the work reflects the material's lasting presence in the history of the site, from its origins as an 18th-century timber yard to the contemporary use of cross-laminated timber within the Timber Square development today. The Unwilding creates a larger visual language across the square, encouraging movement, navigation and discovery throughout the development.

As daylight shifts into evening, the backlit mural transforms alongside the space, activating the arches and creating a changing visual experience for visitors moving through the site ✨

Through its modular structure, interconnected forms and architectural scale, The Unwilding speaks to cycles of growth, regeneration and transformation embedded within the history and identity of Timber Square.

Quick throwback to the International Women’s Day in March where I exhibited my prints with @hxr.world. First pic @naomivds

I am partially so glad I don’t do prints anymore - I never really fully enjoyed the process: printing, packing, delivering - I am the worst person to do that. Now I concentrate more on production/installation and although is so much more demanding, I surprisingly feel so much more at ease. Pick whatever feeds your soul I guess!

But this batch of prints in collaboration with @dennisschnieber photography is a very special project in my heart. We also had a gallery opening for this collab and ~250 people turned up - it was so totally fabulous ❤️ by @akmasya
