Over the last several days, my feed has been inundated with artists, authors, and publishers worldwide trying to decide how to handle the latest AI overreach by Meta.

I understand those in the 'what good will it do to stop now' camp and plan to carry on. You're not wrong that our content has already likely been scraped, here and on other platforms. No social media platform that I am aware of is totally safe. My clients are online - not local - and I need to continue to grow my online presence.

People are discussing other artist-driven platforms like Haven (still in Kickstarter phase) and Cara - which I am on (I have been, but not active - that's likely to change, so feel free to follow me there.)

Some countries can opt out of this new plan. Others can't (US.) Some governments are fighting this. Others...aren't.

Some say the programs to prevent scraping, like Glaze and Nighshade, work well, others say they don't. (I am working on this.)

It's a mess, and I am looking at ALL options right now.

While I figure it out, and after much thought, I have decided to continue with my plan to go black on Insta for a few days, starting tomorrow. It's an act of solidarity, if nothing else. I believe we should use our voices even if we aren't sure what change it will bring. There are 2 date options for the blackout - this is the only week I am able to participate.

I don't plan to leave Instagram - I work with too many authors who are here, and I love being a part of this community. If you are an author looking to leave Insta - where are you going, and can I come, too?! :)

My other reason for blacking out is also a practical one (for me) - it gives me a break, and allows me time to get a plan for online marketing for 2027. I plan to offer templates, and frankly, I need a way to keep getting the word out about what I do. I will likely be changing the way I post art, and likely using tiny snippets and trying to lead people to my website.

I am open to suggestions... where are you going? Authors, where do you go other than Instagram to find artists? Do you visit artists' websites?

BECAUSE TOO MUCH IS NEVER ENOUGH.

*Update- according to some accounts, Meta appears to have backed away from its plans....for now, pending further review.

*I know there is no real solution here. I understand scraping for AI is everywhere. But I can't leave the internet. I can't leave social media; I don't have that luxury.

So out of solidarity, I will be participating in the Instagram Blackout October 30-November 6 in solidarity with others in the Creative community who are sick and tired of having our intellectual property stolen, and are protesting this new scheme of blatant theft by the greedy overlords of Meta. Please swipe to see where to follow me and support my work, as I weigh my options, methods to protect my work, and decide how to continue safely using this platform, if I do at all.

Thank you all, for your continued support. You are my tribe, and I am so grateful for you. ❤️

Book cover commissions for 2026 are closed! Even busy artists need time for fuzzy socks and pumpkin cider :)

I have a few spaces left on my fully custom book cover design roster for 2027. I hope to start offering a few templates early next year, with the hopes of having a dozen or so by the end of 2027.

Because of the time involved in these highly customized book cover projects, I can only accept so many each year.

Are you looking to publish in 2027? I would love to collaborate with you!

Every book cover commission is an opportunity to discover something new, and in the process of creating the cover for The Fall Of Truth, I discovered that I LOVE - and I mean, LOVE - creating gilded frames. Gold everything, please.

I started by building each scroll and leaf in Illustrator as a vector element, and then arranged them into a frame. Every individual element consisted of multiple layers of gold, shadows, highlights, and beveling. Together, they formed the frame on the front cover... I also had the delight of painting this gilded, cloak-draped chair for the back cover.

A closer look at the "Hidden Hybiscus" featured on the cover of the new novel by @elkechantilauthor.

Deep inside a molten cavern, rivulets of glowing red lava create a crimson halo around the snow-white hybiscus. What secrets lie here, in this forgotten place?

I LOVED working on this cover... the contrast of light and dark, the glowing red lava, the blackness of night, life springing anew... bringing so many different elements and tiny details to this new cover art was a fun challenge!! Looking forward to Book III already! (No pressure, Elke! LOL)

I say it often... I have the best job in the world.

The second installation in the Hybiscus Snowflakes series is available now on BookSirens! Be sure to follow the author for more! :)

I haven't had as much time to work on template elements today, but I did manage to start on this castle in the nighttime sky. Full disclosure: it was an excuse to use a lot of TEAL! My favorite color, as many of you well know. 😉
