The current situation on the slabby side of Half Dome has me wistful. As @climbingmagazine reports, the new Snake Dike bolts were chopped by a Bay Area climber, acting “in accordance with the will of the community…. [The bolting] is anathema to the spirit of Snake Dike in particular and of trad climbing in general.”

Nothing new of course. If there’s anything traditional at all about rock climbing, it’s ethical contention.

A particular hotbed of this traditon was Mount Lemmon in the 1980s. It’s a perfectly isolated mountain of blank granite surrounded by desert. Lots of space for big egos and unorthodox thinkers. Plenty of “situations” were handled here by powerdrills, crowbars, and sometimes fistfights.

One such maverick was Ray Ringle who chipped and bolted his way through some of the more blank walls on Lemmon, leaving behind many projects for young bucks to take up the tradition, argue over, chop, rebolt, and send his routes.

In 2001, Young nonconformist Eric Scully and friends tried on “Fuck Me Pumps” for size. Skimpy, sharp as hell, bolted kind of weird. A Ray Ringle masterpiece. In 2014 Tennessee-escaped moto building bad ass Alex Kirkpatrick re-equipped and sent the line at 5.13+, exactly the situation Ray intended.

Phoenix Bouldering Contest
Oak Flat, Arizona, 2003

Desert wandering, bouldering festival, dyno comp, all night party. A happening in the vast volcanic landscape 50 miles outside Phoenix, Arizona. This was the 20th year of the PBC. Lots of familiar faces in here, from when the world of climbing was a bit smaller.

I was busy coaching my @rocksandropestucson climbing team, @tucsonclimbingproject and mostly put the camera away until the evening. I remember showing some prints of mine to the great @peternoebels around a campfire that night. He shuffled through them and encouraged me to pursue a career in photography.

Ten years later this 2,400 acre piece of US Forest Service land - which holds great significance for the San Carlo Apache Tribe and has been historically protected for recreation - became quietly earmarked for transfer to a multinational mining conglomerate, Rio Tinto. For the benefit of mostly foreign interests, Oak Flat would be transformed into a 20-square mile mining operation. At its center, the massive boulder field of the PBC would collapse into a 2 mile wide, 1000 foot deep crater. A landscape forever ruined and permanently off-limits.
