Yeah, that's my face and story sprawled across six pages of Out There, an international award-winning queer travel magazine and yes, it's my biggest feature yet 😭

I still remember, literal days before lockdown, while one of my faves on the planet @tjrodwell was visiting from UK, and he invited me to join him for dinner with some of his mates who were also visiting.

Martin (@martinoutthere) showed us around the gorgeous Camp's Bay mansion they were staying at, and we did a little photoshoot before he and Kadin proper wined and dined us.

A couple of days later, Martin reached out with an interview request for Out There - obvs I said, "FUCK YES!" - so I spent a couple of hours talking about where I'm from, where I was at the time, my journey as a queer POC, what I loved and hated about the music industry, Cape Town and its beauty contrasted with its ugly realities... Literally everything.

It didn't make sense to publish the Cape Town edition of their travel magazine during lockdown, but earlier this year the issue finally went to print. Sadly we lost the pics from that cute shoot, but it gave me the opportunity to feature some of the dopest shoots I'd been involved in.

Thank you Thomas for the hookup. Thank you Martin for the interest in my story and for sending me a personal copy all the way from UK. And a huge thank you to Uwern Jong (@uwern), Editor and award-winning writer, for telling my story with such care and respect.

Can't believe, after over a decade of performing in CPT, that I'm finally presenting a jazz show as a bandleader! Been such a long time coming. Been working so hard to get here. And I feel ready. The fact that I get to debut at my favourite live music venue in CT is extra special.

Crazy excited to debut the Clapper Core-tet, featuring some exceptionally cooking young cats who have been my musical anchor since arriving at the South African College of Music.

Featuring favourites from my past recitals & taking a handful of new arrangements for a first-time spin, we're diving into the Great American Songbook with a curation of beautiful ballads, sassy swing, bouncing bebop, and a flirt with Latin.

The Clapper Core-tet features:

More or less what was going through my mind as I was improvising.

Improv is about listening, about split-second reaction, about seeing into the future, and about drawing on everything you've ever listened to and deciding what's gonna serve the moment.
